I'm convinced.  My deWalt will be my last saw.

THANK YOU.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Clock question
« on: December 21, 2010, 10:46:42 am »
I'm no clock expert but I do understand Physics.
Your question deals with the issue of torque.  How much torque can the clock movement give to moving hands.
The maximum torque will be needed (for a clock running backwards) at the three o'clock position.  Or depending how you number the clock its due right of the drive shaft.
At that point the torque is needed to raise the hand(s) upward. The amount needed is the product of the distance to the center of gravity of the hand TIMES the weight of the hand.  You might measure it as inch ounces (inches x ounces).
Try this, estimate or weigh your proposed clock hand.  Guess about where the center of gravity is (Its near the center of the cross section AREA of the hand).  Calculate in inch ounces the torque needed.
Once you know that, make a trial hand from say some coat hanger wire. Make it long enough to hang the same amount of wood at that distance from the center.  Try it out.  Is the motor strong enough (Have sufficient torque) to lift the hand when it is due right of center.  If it is, you got it.
I know, lengthy answer but I can't explain it any better than that.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Dust Problems?

Thanx to all who responded.  I'll not be doing any MDF cutting and probably rig up an additional filter to prevent the dust from traveling too far.
Thanks again for your thoughts.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Dust Problems?

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr
I just abandoned my garage workshop for the basement.  The only space down there is the furnace room.  And to that I wonder about the wisdom of scroll saw dust next to the gas furnace.
Is there a problem from an explosion point of view.  And what will this do to the home's ductwork.  Is mama going to be screaming at me?
The furnace does have a pretty good filter system on it.
Your thoughts?

Pattern Requests. / 2010 Snow Flake
« on: November 23, 2010, 11:28:55 am »
I've been thinking about what to make the grand kids for Christmas.  I usually give them a Christmas Ornament to hang on the tree.  They have an heirloom collection I hope they remember me by.

For this year I'd like to cut a snow flake with "2010" buried in the pattern.

Anybody got any ideas how I'd find one or create one?

On November 18, 2010 I posted "My Scroll Saw Table" with photos.  If you'd like to see what I did just scroll back to the 18th and find "My Scroll Saw Table".  I had several nice compliments.

Be my guest.
There's a saying like: imitation is the highest form of flattery.

Hey Dave,
I took my measurements of the saw, length & width, increased both by 2" and that became the "plan view" dimensions of the box (26 3/4" x 14"). I cut 3 pieces of plywood for the top, bottom and tilt piece to those dimensions.  The box sides are 30" high.
Tops, sides and shelf, for drawer, are rabbeted into each other by 3/8".  The box parts were then glued together, no screws, nails or brads.
In the photos you'll notice I built an outrigger for the front casters to better prevent tipping over.
After all that I added the tilt table with brass hinges, the wings with piano hinges and trimmed the box with "1 by" pine trim.
Ain't nuthin I'd change.

Thanx Dunk.

I just don't let go until the part is on the wing.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Another Question - Power Tools
« on: November 18, 2010, 08:23:51 pm »
Becky for sure do that look see with your fried and his tools.  You'll be amazed the amount of wood chips the planer produces.  That wood you are removing turns to chips and you'll need some way to contain it and clean it up.
Doing scroll saw work I don't think you ever have enough sanding capability.  A spindle sander you might consider.  There is just too many different ways to go.

I showed this on another thread and had some nice comments.  I share it here also.
(The first)  topic made me think I'm doing something VERY different but I really like it.  I bought my scroll saw without a stand so I had to build my own.  After considering what I liked and didn't like as well as what I thought ought to be added I came up with the following design.
http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/h1ucOysAKslk1J-_V9iDCg?feat=directlink

Basically it is a 3/4"plywood box, on casters, with a drawer for storage of blades, tools, etc.

I roll it to the center of my garage and it's caster drop into a control joint in the concrete floor so it does not roll any further. The two collapsible side wings provide places to set parts in progress of being cut. The area below the saw holds an old salt bag for scrap storage.

As for tilt, I can tilt up to 12 inches.  I have found 7 inches is my favorite cutting angle.

Since this photo was taken I have added a bungee cord around the step support to prevent it from falling from vibration.
For the record I've got about $30.00 tied up in it.

According to the Porter Cable website it sez:

"# Tool-less blade holder design uses standard 5" length pinned and blank end blades"
