General Scroll Saw Talk / It's the darndest thing
« on: July 22, 2012, 12:10:51 pm »
This is so weird....

My homepage is a Google "/lg" page.  It has a bunch of apps on it like email, local temps, stock market stuff and some "To Do" lists.

I fired up the computer recently and the "To Do" lists didn't load....just stayed blank.  I got tired of waiting so I went to "Scroll Saw Workshop" (SSW) to check out what was going on.  After clicking on SSW hyperlink the "to Do" app appeared for a fraction of a second then disappeared as SSW came on screen.  I didn't think anything of it and went about my business.

Some time later I returned to my homepage and still no ToDo list.  I then went to SSW and again a flash of ToDo and SSW loaded.    Whoa, I said and tried it again.  It did it again!!!!!

Can anyone explain what gremlin is in my computer or link to SSW?

General Scroll Saw Talk / Linking to a previous thread
« on: July 23, 2011, 10:42:58 am »
Is there a way to link to a previous thread when replying to a question.  There is a current question on this board about scroll saw tables.  I posted my ideas some time ago and can find that post using a search on "authors".

How do I link to it when answering the current question?

General Scroll Saw Talk / Dust Problems?
« on: December 07, 2010, 11:50:00 am »
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr
I just abandoned my garage workshop for the basement.  The only space down there is the furnace room.  And to that I wonder about the wisdom of scroll saw dust next to the gas furnace.
Is there a problem from an explosion point of view.  And what will this do to the home's ductwork.  Is mama going to be screaming at me?
The furnace does have a pretty good filter system on it.
Your thoughts?

Pattern Requests. / 2010 Snow Flake
« on: November 23, 2010, 11:28:55 am »
I've been thinking about what to make the grand kids for Christmas.  I usually give them a Christmas Ornament to hang on the tree.  They have an heirloom collection I hope they remember me by.

For this year I'd like to cut a snow flake with "2010" buried in the pattern.

Anybody got any ideas how I'd find one or create one?

General Scroll Saw Talk / My scroll saw table
« on: November 18, 2010, 08:15:45 pm »
I showed this on another thread and had some nice comments.  I share it here also.
(The first)  topic made me think I'm doing something VERY different but I really like it.  I bought my scroll saw without a stand so I had to build my own.  After considering what I liked and didn't like as well as what I thought ought to be added I came up with the following design.
http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/h1ucOysAKslk1J-_V9iDCg?feat=directlink

Basically it is a 3/4"plywood box, on casters, with a drawer for storage of blades, tools, etc.

I roll it to the center of my garage and it's caster drop into a control joint in the concrete floor so it does not roll any further. The two collapsible side wings provide places to set parts in progress of being cut. The area below the saw holds an old salt bag for scrap storage.

As for tilt, I can tilt up to 12 inches.  I have found 7 inches is my favorite cutting angle.

Since this photo was taken I have added a bungee cord around the step support to prevent it from falling from vibration.
For the record I've got about $30.00 tied up in it.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Where Do The Shavings Go?
« on: August 01, 2010, 01:14:45 pm »
I recently acquired a 12 1/2" surface planer to use in a re-sawing process.  I also came into some badly weathered lumber that needed to be cleaned up.  After doing some planing I noticed it was easier to sweep up the shavings rather than try to suck them up with a shop vac.  My wife saw what I had collected and said "why don't you put that on the flower beds"
That got me thinking about how much stuff I throw away from the shop vac.  Why can't it also go to the flower beds instead of to a land fill?

Certainly I'll have to magnetically remove the occasional screw or nail that might find its way into the shop vac.

Who else collects and recycles their debris.  Are there any negatives to doing this?

General Scroll Saw Talk / Inlaying letters
« on: June 23, 2010, 08:22:40 pm »
I've built a number of bases for my various power tools.
One in particular I call my sanding center.  It supports my Oscillating Spindle Sander and my Combo Belt Sander/Disk Sander.  In this table I'm going to install 8 drawers to hold all the abrasives.  I'd like to inlay the product type in letters on the drawer front so the various drawers would say:  Paper, Drums, Disks, Cloth (Carborundum) Screens, etc.
The Drawer front is 3/4" Pine roughly 5 1/2 by 14".  I plan on stack cutting at about a 2 1/2 degree table tilt using walnut to inset into the pine.  The question is what font and how big in points?
Suggestions?
As an additional question I would like suggestions on how to inlay the centers of certain letters such as the "O" or an "e".  Is this an inlay in the letter inlay?

General Scroll Saw Talk / Woddenclocks - Clock1- Help needed.
« on: June 01, 2010, 01:12:57 pm »
Are there any clock builders on this board that have built Woodenclocks Clock1?  I found the plans for this at:
www.woodenclocks.co.uk

It intrigued me and I started making it.  I'm stopped at the point of assembly trying to figure out how the clock mechanism (gear train) is connected to the pendulum mechanism.  I simply do not understand it.

On what might be a related matter I do not see where the Yoke #21 goes.

I need HELP

General Scroll Saw Talk / DeWalt 788 plus a Foot Switch
« on: May 29, 2010, 02:36:38 pm »
After reading a number of posts I concluded the first thing to go on the DeWalt 788 must be the switch.  For those that have had to replace the switch I have a question:
I use a foot switch and leave the main switch on all the time.  Wouldn't that tend to "save" the switch or is something else causing the switch failures? (Dust, Vibration ??? other things)
A second question would be am I doing something improper by relying on the foot switch for on-off operation.

I was thinking about what tools I use in support of my scroll sawing.  I'd think it interesting what others use.  Here are my three most important:

1. Drill Press  (for making starter holes)
2. Oscillating Spindle Sander  (Finishing Prep.)
3. Band Saw  (Cutting large stock down & Resawing)

What do you think?

Introduce Yourself. / Hello from Brighton, Michigan
« on: April 19, 2010, 10:48:03 am »
I'm Bud Prine.  Fairly new to scroll sawing, about a year now.

Since I retired in 2008 I've been aggressive in fitting out my garage shop.  Bought many of my tools off Craig's List.  So far I've done a number of Peg's & Jokers boards, a few Wooble bowls, started a wooden gear clock and my first Intarsia piece.  My Scroll Saw is a DeWalt 788.  I created a home made stand for it that I intend to publish of photo of.

Glad to see this forum start up except I suspect I will spend tooooooo much time here.

Thanks for your good work Steve, I, for one, appreciate it.
