General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: manuals

I've bought several tools on Craigslist.  Once I acquire a new (to me) tool I Google the tool model number along with the term "manual".  I then download the manual and 3 hole punch the paper then put it into a notebook.
By Googling it I often end up on the Manufacturers site.  Many manufacturers offer a PDF version.

Hi

I skinned this cat another way.  I have a shop vac and yes it is noisy.  What I did was get an extension hose for it and put in where I couldn't hear it.  In my case I work in my garage and I set it outside around the corner.  I can hardly hear it.

Hey, works for me.

The procedures listed above are good ones.  I do it a little different and will be putting my cast iron table top to bed for the winter soon using another procedure that I find a bit more effective.  My tools are stored in my garage for the winter and I will not be using them.

I get the heavier rust, grime, spilled stuff and any contaminants of using the above recommended procedures. Then I take the extra step as follows:
1.  I apply Boeshield "Rust Free" remove it and the last vestiges of corrosion.
2.  I shine the cast iron to a shiny "like new" brilliance using ScotchBright.
3. I apply a healthy coat of Boeshield T-9 and let it dry 24-48 hours.  Then I wipe off any residual.  The Cast Iron  feels like glass.
4. I then will cover the tools with loose fitting covers that do not touch the tops.  That's it.

I expect to return from my winter get away to "like new" cast Iron tops next spring.

Boeshield was developed by Boeing as a protectorant and I can attest to its effectiveness.

Their Website:  http://boeshield.com/

It can be purchased thru Amazon.com

Good luck

I'd get the bark off then let it dry for a year.  If you cut it into lengths be sure to paint the ends to slow down the drying at the ends.  If you don't it will develop shrinkage cracks making it less usable.

After its dry if you can find a sawmill to "slab" it up that will make the rest of your work easier.  When drying slabs make sure you put wood slats between the slabs and keep them together to prevent warping.

Hi Crusty

As dgman said its cast iron.  I've been cleaning up several cast iron tables lately and really like the results.

Its turning out that the black you are seeing is basically rust.  Apparently black first then it browns up.

To do my cleaning I've been using Boeshield Rust Free followed up with a coating of Boeshield T-9.  It ain't cheap but it sure looks nice.  Boeshield was developed by Boeing Aircraft to prevent rust.  Its available at most wood working shops and online.

I bought an older Ridgid table saw on Craig's list.  It had been neglected.  After cleaning with Rust Free then polishing with Scotch Brite and coating with T-9 it looks like a fresh new saw.  Now my other cast iron tables are getting the treatment to preserve them.

Hi PoppaRob

I do live "up north" just outside of Detroit.  That's not the reason for the salt bags though.
We get our water from a well with hard water.  The salt is used in the water softener.  I reuse the bags for trash.  They work great and don't cost anything.  (Unless you call the salt free).

This is so weird....

My homepage is a Google "/lg" page.  It has a bunch of apps on it like email, local temps, stock market stuff and some "To Do" lists.

I fired up the computer recently and the "To Do" lists didn't load....just stayed blank.  I got tired of waiting so I went to "Scroll Saw Workshop" (SSW) to check out what was going on.  After clicking on SSW hyperlink the "to Do" app appeared for a fraction of a second then disappeared as SSW came on screen.  I didn't think anything of it and went about my business.

Some time later I returned to my homepage and still no ToDo list.  I then went to SSW and again a flash of ToDo and SSW loaded.    Whoa, I said and tried it again.  It did it again!!!!!

Can anyone explain what gremlin is in my computer or link to SSW?

I used to manage a group using Google.  I'd suggest you "Google" 'Google Groups".
They have a help center and there you can report this type of activity.
They'll investigate and shut it down for everyone if they find it is used for spamming.

Thanks for the input Bill.  I have the riser but no real need for it now.  Maybe I'll keep it for future reference.

That's a steal of a deal.  I have the same saw, although I have put many accessories and mods on it.  I like the accessories Carter makes for bandsaws, and I have bought the roller guides, the scrolling guide, and the quick tension release.  It all goes to making the bandsaw fun.  It also comes in handy when you want to resaw boards into thinner ones.  I have the riser block on mine, increasing the capacity to 12" thick boards.  I have resawed 10" boards with good results.  You are going to enjoy that tool.  One suggestion, if you are new to bandsaws, watch a couple of the videos on proper setup and use and get a couple of good blades.
Bill I have a question for you.  I too recently bought a Rigid band saw with the riser block.  The block is not in it....yet.  The question is regarding power of the motor.  If you go for the greater cutting depth doesn't the motor bog down since the original saw was designed for the shallower cut?  I'm not sure I want (or need) the greater cutting depth.

Is there a way to link to a previous thread when replying to a question.  There is a current question on this board about scroll saw tables.  I posted my ideas some time ago and can find that post using a search on "authors".

How do I link to it when answering the current question?
