OK - Here goes!  Here I am a designer for over 13 years who works with scroll saws all the time.  I read a post last week about a newbie who was embarrassed that he had the blade in upside down.  Everyone here was supportive, so that was great.

So yesterday, I spent about 3-4 hours cutting out 12 new ornaments I just designed.  I use Pau Amarillo, which was new to me.  Things went OK, but I was wondering if the tension on my DeWalt 788 was having some issues, as it seemed the blade just wasn't tight enough. I really felt it in my shoulder from having to push the top arm down so hard to get the blade to tighten properly.  But all went pretty much OK for the most part and I did finish the ornaments.

I peeled off the paper pattern this morning because I want to sand and finish them today, and I noticed there was a little ridge around all the cuts on the TOPS of the ornaments.  Yes, I am sure this was the top because they are to be embellished with small crystals and I needed to drill depressions in the tops of each of them.

Then it dawned on me . . . . I cut ALL 12  ornaments with the blade UPSIDE DOWN!  (DOH!)

Yeppers!  I certainly did!

I think that qualifies me for another year's membership in the "Idiots Club", don't you?

Good thing I am a "professional"!!!  LOL :)

Another new Candle Holder that I designed.  This one is a grizzly bear in the forest.  I used Hickory for the wood and I finished it in mineral oil, followed by a spray shellac.

I hope you like it too! :)  Sheila

Hi, everyone.  I wanted to post this new candle tray that I designed.  It is a cross candle tray and charm set for your large jar patterns.  I have a couple of more that I am working on too so watch for them in the future.

Thanks so much, Sheila :)

Pattern Requests. / Looking for Florida Gators pattern please
« on: August 03, 2010, 06:26:10 am »
Hi y'all!  A friend of mine is looking for a Florida Gator's mascot pattern.  I recently saw some projects that were nice with that on them.  Can anyone direct me to the pattern?  If it is a pattern that is for sale, that is cool too.  Let me know where I can get it at and I will be happy direct him to purchase it.

Thanks in advance and have a great day!  Sheila  ;D

Brag Forum / New Candle Tray and Charm Sets Finished
« on: August 01, 2010, 06:26:23 pm »
Hi, everyone.

I finally finished the first set of Candle Trays and Charms.  They are all done and the patterns are available on my site.  I have about 40 that I want to do, but I am doing them in small batches so I stay fresh when drawing.  I hope you like them.  Thanks for looking,

Sheila :)

Hi everyone.  This is kind of a weird request.  This evening, I had a gentleman call me from Spring Hill, Florida.  He had seen my "Welcome to the Nut House" segmentation in the magazine and wondered if I had any for sale.  I explained to him that I don't typically sell finished items, and I did not have one.  He asked if I knew of anyone who would want to make one for him, because he had arthritis and couldn't use his hands.

I would like to help him, but I just don't have the time.  I was wondering if any one here would want to talk to him about doing it.  I don't know how much he is willing to spend, but I told him I would put it up on the board here and ask.  I know lots of you like to do woodworking as a hobby and aren't trying to make a living at it and would possibly want to help.

If you are interested, please let me know and I will forward your phone number to him.  He is a nice man and seems reasonable and polite when I talked to him.

Thanks for your consideration.

Sheila :)

General Scroll Saw Talk / Thanks so much to Steve
« on: July 13, 2010, 07:40:58 am »
I don't really start a lot of topics, although I do chime in a lot with what is here.  I am sure that there are many threads with the subject line 'Thanks to Steve' for all the wonderful things he does for our group here, but I felt I really wanted to say something that 'goes without staying' but is better said anyway.

Thanks, Steve for all the hard work you do for scroll sawing.  I loved the pictures from the SAW Expo along with the commentary.  It really helped those of us who weren't able to attend feel that we were part of the event. For me anyway, it made me want to work harder to make it to a future show and be part of things myself.

I know I am not alone in saying how much you are appreciated for your work at promoting scroll sawing.  You help everyone in the industry from vendors to small businesses to people who are new to sawing and provide a fun and educational place for us to share our passion for woodworking and meet new friends and exchange information.

I personally have loved the site here and have made many new friends because of it.  It has not only made my days better, but has inspired me to work even harder to promote scroll sawing in general. You are a fine example.  It is wonderful to meet so many talented and gifted people who are willing to help others.  It has been a pleasure to be a member and I look forward to hearing from the 'regulars' as well as welcoming newcomers into our forum.

It is a tremendous amount of work on your part and I just want to say how much I appreciate it. Thanks so much.  :)

Brag Forum / New Candle Tray and Charms

Hi, everyone!  Here is a picture of a new design of mine that I like a lot.  It is a small try to go under jar candles and a couple of charms to 'decorate' the candle itself.  The labels for the jar candles are nice, but let's face it - it would be much more appealing to have a seasonal tray and seasonal charms (at least I think so!)  This is the first of several Holiday and Seasonal designs I am developing.  The tray can also double as a nice frame, if you want and the charms as ornaments.  Lots of fun stuff to do with this one.  I hope you all like it.

Sheila

PS - The pattern is now available on my site. :)

I received the following question from a fellow scroll sawyer.  I have not had any experience with the Hitachi saw.  Have any of you?  Any help would be appreciated.  Here is the question I was asked:

"I can't afford a Dewalt 788 at this time but Lowe's has a clearout sale on the Hitachi CW40, 16 inch Variagle Speed Scroll Saw.  It only has a 1/4 horse motor on it.  I was wondering if you have ever run into this saw or know anything about it.  Thanks for any help.  I believe the sale price is $130, down from $170."

Thanks to everyone in advance!  Sheila :)

Brag Forum / New "See Creature" Moose au naturel
« on: June 07, 2010, 11:01:42 am »
And now for the ?Moose Lover in all of us!? . . . The Moose See Creature! As with the White Tail Deer, the original pattern was made from MDF and painted. Keeping with the philosophy that ?Naked is nicer? I decided to show this moose in his altogether too. (Oh, come on! . . . We only see his head!) This handsome creature was made from Mahogany, with Walnut antlers. I used 3/4? Mahogany and 1/4? Walnut. It is finished with mineral oil and paste wax, but you can spray it with poly or your favorite finish if you want. It is quick, easy and fun and sure to be a great conversation piece! I hope you enjoy them! (Oh, you could also hang these on a wall to hold your shop glasses!)

This is the White Tail Deer ?See Creature? that I designed in it?s natural wood state. The original pattern was made from MDF and painted. But after realizing that many woodworkers didn?t take kindly to painting wood, I made a deer which was intended to by displayed in its? altogether! This was made from Oak, with Walnut antlers. I used 3/4? Oak and 1/4? Walnut. It is finished with mineral oil and paste wax, but you can spray it with poly or your favorite finish if you want. It is quick, easy and fun and sure to be a great conversation piece! (Oh, you could also hang these on a wall to hold your shop glasses!)

I hope you like him! Sheila

General Scroll Saw Talk / Flying Dutchman New Spiral Blades
« on: June 01, 2010, 07:09:49 pm »
Has anyone tried them?  What do you think?  I am just starting to try some portrait style cutting and I have some of the original FD blades and also some blades from Garnet Hall here in Canada.  Garnet does beautiful Intarsia patterns and is a good supplier of blades and stuff, especially for us up here in Canada.  I really would like to know what differences, if any you see with the new blades. As a newbie with spiral blades, I wouldn't know apples from oranges.  Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
