Pattern maker

I would like some advice  on a software package to do my own patterns. I have used the coyote stencil and wasnt good at it. I am not computer savy at all    so with that in mind do yall have any suggestions for me.

I know there is alot of them out there And since I got repermanded the last time I offered an opion all I will say is Ask one o the great pattern makers Like Paul 'Granpa' Steve good in the ask Steve section Charlie D and there is quite a few others that can help you out with this Now as for me being a starter in that game I use Open office and picnic with Gimp all free downloads I'm cheap like that lol...

John a good starter program that will allow you to edit photos and do some limited drawing with it. The one I'm comfortable with is, Paint.NET.

There are two basic types of graphics out there. There are vector based graphics created by programs like Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw, and Inkscape. Then there are bitmap or raster graphics like those created by Adobe Photoshop, Corel Photopaint and GIMP.

I would defiantly start off with the free programs they are very good and you can explore to find out what works best for you.

I am with Russ on this.  Always start with something free and then decide for yourself.  As for me, I use an older version of Coral Draw, Adobe PhotoShop CS5 and Adobe Illustrator CS5.

What kind of pattern do you make? do you convert photos into patterns? Or do you use predefined stuff?

I use OpenOffice a lot, that one makes a lot of basic things simple. Currently I'm often using stencils that I get on the web. But be sure to use only free graphics (asking helps otherwise also...).

I have the gimp installed now. I just have to learn how to get a photo transfered over to it. Have not figured it out but I will work on it. Thanks for all the input

try just right clicking on the photo and the select "Open With"
It should give you the option to open it with the software on your PC.

When in gimp ..go to file (left top) and then to open ... find your file and double click and it will transport it to gimp.

Thanks for all the help guys. As much as I want to learn this I feel like an idiot trying to do it. I guess I will just have to pay for my patterns

If you follow along you learn some of the basics of Gimp.  SSV also has tutorials on Inkscape.

I am not artistic enough to create my own designs but to modify some using Gimp.

Gabby I did right click on it and it didnt have gimp as one of the options 

There should have been an option that allowed you to search for other options on your computer. I probably didn't recognize the new program yet. Try again.
