I'm I seeing the pattern correctly - that the whiskers and ears extend out past the backer? Wouldn't they be really fragile?

they would be a bit fragile, but really what stresses are on them once you hang up the art?

Any time I am mailing/transporting flat items that are fragile I sandwich them between two pieces of card board with a little tape.
