Hey!

I just want to mention, that I have seen this made another way:

The cage is cut, and then the wood is put into warm water. After some time in there the cage should be bendable and the ball can be pushed firmly in. When the wood drys again, the ball is caught in there.

If I only couldt find the link to that instruction now...

Hi Torsten, yes that's the same way they do the captured nail puzzle. It is more fun to do the carving but the other way sure saves on the cut fingers.

Ah, cool, Thanks Marcel. I was already wondering where I saw the technique as I could not find the link again.

I also think that wet wood does not bend unlimited, so the cage might break when bend to much.

HA! Found it - by accident, but I think this counts too 

It was in a pictured instruction for a golf ball cage from DWSudekum, who is also a member here.
It suggests to put the wood into boiling water for at least half an hour.
