Tough challenge today
« on: January 22, 2011, 08:35:54 pm »
I had four students registered for my beginner scroll saw class today. Three showed up on time, Three gentlemen. Everything was going along fine. One hour into the class the fourth student showed up, A twelve year old boy! I had never taught a child before so it was tough getting him familiar with the scroll saw and cutting properly while keeping the other students busy. Fortunately The three gentlemen where quick Learners and did not need as much attention as the twelve year old.
By the end of the three hour class, The three gentlemen had completed their projects and where quite happy with what they had learned.
I gave my demo projects to the boy so he had something to give to his mother for Valentines day. He was very happy too.
I don't know how you do it Mrsn!

Teaching 12-year-olds is interesting. I love it, but I don't know if I would like teaching adults as well. Kids relate to things very differently then adults do. But I bet you made him really happy by giving him the demo pieces. You might have inspired the next generation of scroll sawers today :)

Great Story and a grand gesture. How many others would have said, "You're too late, sorry".

Dan, that was very inspiring, We need more woodworkers like you. The more kids we can get interested in woodworking the more kids we keep off the streets getting themselves into mischief. I commend you.

I don't think it hurts to mix the ages when it comes to craft, I think it earns respect from all ages

You've done a very good thing, Dan.  You taught the older gentlemen how to scroll saw, but you probably taught the young man much more than that.  I too, hope he comes back and I suspect he will.
