tape on Luon
« on: September 06, 2017, 10:30:34 am »
i had a request to make "puzzle piece" picture frames 1/4in thick. to in order to have a backer i am using 1/8th in luon plywood.
when i peal off the blue painters tape it tends to take long slivers of wood off the face.
will the shelf paper from your 9-6-17 prevent this from happening?

Greetings,
There are a lot of routes you can take to eliminate your problem.
You can look for LOW ADHESION or LOW TACK on the description of the
tape.
Since it is just the backer, I don't know why you have to use any tape at all.
Normally, I would think you just trace the shape of the project onto the backer and
cut the backer out.
Finally, if you really have to use the tape on the backer, you can either use
mineral spirits to release the glue so it removes easier or you can heat the tape
up either with a heat gun or blow drier and I have even heard of members putting it
in a microwave for a short time. That will make the tape come up much easier.
Good luck with your project and God Bless! Spirithorse

Thats the bad thing with the laun wood, its got a pretty red tinge color but any tape peels it off is thin slivers, I used it alot since it was red in color and had this issue alot mostly at the edges.

Sometimes peeling the tape off slow and at a angle prevented it but it still happened. Soemtime the veener don't get glued good and will peel off.

I went to using those full sheet shipping labels. Print on the label stick it down cut, then to remove it I used a hair dryer and heat up the label and it would peel off with just the weight of the wood and nothing would come up with it.

I bought myself that "new" Peel & Stick from Walmart. While I have not used it on Luon Ply, I do like that it doesn't pull up the grain as blue or green tapes do. Beside being cheaper as Steve's vedio explaines, having the shelf liner come off in one piece and not leave glue residue is a big plus in my book. As a side not, I have been able to cut one or two pieces from my original pattern application and then remove the uncut patter/liner and reattach it to another board. I only did this for a couple of last cuts and the adhesive held well enough to. PS don't be afraid of the linner since the label says "permanent ". Cheers Brian
