?Walnut Oil

I know I just started a thread on oiling, but have a new question. A friend just gave me a small bottle of walnut oil, she heard me say that I needed to buy some linseed oil for finishing. She thought that maybe I could use this. Anybody used walnut oil as a finish?

Hey David, Walnut oil is fine but is very expensive. Here in the states boiled linseed oil is about $15.00 a gallon. Walnut oil is about that much for a pint.

Thanks dgman. Was going to experiment on some pine, before using it on more expansive wood. But now I know at least.

I'm a bit jealous on your freind, would she become my freind to 
walnut must be great on the grain.
I like working with oil. I often don't varnish it.
I dilute my oils often with pure orange oil.
personaly i like to use Tung oil even better then lineseed.
Lineseed makes the wood a bit yellow after time.
Tung smells better to

In holland Boiled linseed is the cheapest at fixit store, almost half the price from the praxis store

I by my other oils in Germany at www.dick.biz
they're cheap and give good service. (free sending above +/- $160,--)
.... they are not allowed to send every type of oil because of european law restrictions....

I was about to ask you where you buy your oils. Good friend just checked the label she bought it at AH. I just finished to crosses and some bookmarks. Wanted to take pics but battery in camera is flat. I wish I started using oil earlier on, I think it looks great. Once my batteries reload I will take a pic and post it.

David if you are going to use wallnut oil as a food safe oil be very careful as a lot of people are alerject to nuts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is odd you should ask about walnut oil.  I bought some from Woodcraft  awhile back, and as Dgman said it is quite expensive.  It looks nice on everything and gives a warm golden (slight) tint.  I completed a fretwork card basket tonight out of 1/4 oak.  I used the Walnut Oil, because it was at hand, and it turned out nice.  It takes a long time to dry and sunlight really helps the drying process.  Whatever you use it on will look nice, but it ain't cheap

Hi Jimbo,
I was thinking about the allergy just last night and wondered if it would also affect people using the bookmarks etc. So I plan on putting a little notice on products with walnut oil telling people what the finish is. Thanks for mentioning it though.
