The Coffee Shop / Cataract Sugery
« on: May 05, 2012, 10:54:33 pm »
Well, as some of ya'll have already wished me well, just letting everyone know I will be having my 2nd(this time left eye) cataract surgery Wednesday May 9. The right eye has progressed well, so maybe after this left one is done I will be able to see again! Right now, with one good eye and one bad eye, my sight has been terrible. (Not so bad I can't scroll! LOL) The magnifyer and light have been a blessing! But, as with the right eye surgery, doc says no saw dust for two weeks !! OUCH! But, will have a few patterns ready to cut when two weeks is up!

I use an MSA with goggles and glasses. Look like an alien! It is recommended to change the filters out pretty often, but, I just wait until I labor to breath. Will be having my 2nd cataract surgery wednesday, so, maybe the glasses will be gone, but, will still use goggles. Thank goodness for my magnifier and lamp!

Can't believe the heat is already here in NE Texas! 92 deg. here yesterday and summer has not even begun! Hope we don't have another drought like we had last summer, because most of my neighbors, included us, had to sell all or most of our horses and cows. The hay and feed went out of sight! We had a very good spring, and the grass and hay is plentiful right noe, but, with no rain in the next few days, the grass will be gone already. Oh well, means more scrolling time and less farm work!LOL

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: First Stack Cut

I like the way you think  Jack! Thank you! ;D Also want to thank all for your advice. I am still learning from ya'll and every day learn something new! I did, by the way, order some #5 FD-UR blades from Mike and will give them a try. I sped up my saw today on some stack cuts and slowed my feed, and seemed to work better for me.

Jim, just letting you know what I do about my round corner bases. I am not saying it is the best way, but, it is an easier method for me. I cut most of my bases with square ends and then use my router to round the corners.

Thank ya'll soooo much for your advice! Getting expert advice is one reason I joined this forum and I have learned so much from you guys! I never thought about using glue or nails. I use the #3 TLB Olson blade, but, I am going to try the Olson MACH #3's. Again, thank ya'll.

General Scroll Saw Talk / First Stack Cut
« on: April 27, 2012, 05:23:07 pm »
I did my first stack cut today! Man, why have I waited so long? I felt I had accomplished so much more and now want to cut more 1/8-1/4 material patterns so I can stack them. The only problem I had was more "fuzzies" on the bottoms. I was using a #3 Olson blade on 1/4"baltic burch plywood stacked 2 deep at about 90% speed. Any advice for a better cut, like blades and or speed. And also, I was using blue painters tape under pattern and around edges. Not complaining though, I was proud of my results!

I have been a member for only about 4 months, but, ya'll have made me feel part of the "family of scrolling", not a "potential" member. From day one, I received many nice replys from my first post and have certainly received help and advice and encouragement from  this forum family! Thanks to Steve and all the others who put this thing together and for all the time they put in to keep it up and running! HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!

General Scroll Saw Talk / Need Advice on Blade/Wood
« on: April 15, 2012, 07:36:29 pm »
I need advice from you experienced scrollers out there. I thought I had it all figured out! HAHA! I have been using #3  and #5 Olson blades on all my work , which has been out of 1/2 to 3/4 hard wood, mostly poplar, and baltic burch plywood. I have my saw (EX21) set about 85% speed and my blade tension set just fine. I was not making mistakes(not too many anyway HA). Anyway, I  decided to cut out the rifle Steve has on the pattern site, so went and bought 1/8 and 1/4 baltic plywood and put in a #2 Olson blade. I could not control my cutting! Way to fast, so I turned down the saw speed, but, did not want to put load on saw cutting that slow. I thought the smaller the blade, the slower the cut. Am I wrong? Should I even use smaller blades on the thinner material? I know the longer I scroll, I will choose my own blade preference, but, sort of like playing golf, bad habits are hard to break! HA!
