Brag Forum / Welcome Horse Plaque from Steve Good
« on: January 11, 2020, 04:15:52 pm »
Here is a pattern from Steve that was posted 12/28/19 on his blog.

The wood for the horses is Virola at 1/4" thick that has been run through a wire wheel machine and painted black.
The back piece is palette wood which has been burned with a propane torch.
It has a chain attached for hanging.
Finished dimensions are: 10 1/2" T x 14 3/4" W

It is a gift for my daughter for the place she has her horses.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Past issues of CWW&C on Ebay
« on: August 31, 2019, 08:41:19 am »
There are some past issues of CWW&C listed on Ebay in case you want some.

While I was comparing what was on sale with what I had - three listings sold!  These were early issues from the early 90's.

SO, if anyone here bought them AND you end up with duplicates - PM me and I might need them (or maybe not).

General Scroll Saw Talk / Creative Woodworks magazines on Ebay
« on: April 25, 2019, 09:14:30 pm »
I know a number of people have looked for back issues and I just found an opportunity for someone who wants some.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Creative-Woodworks-and-Crafts-Magazines-20-/293064439082?&_trksid=p2056016.l4276
that has 20 issues for 19.99 and 10.03 shipping.  ($1.50/ issue)

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Creative-Woodworks-and-Crafts-Magazines-29-total-/293064391792?&_trksid=p2056016.l4276
that one has 29 issues for 29.99 and 12.63 shipping  ($1.47/ issue)

Not a bad price.

I have no idea who the person is and is no benefit to me.  This is just to help out.

If you decide to buy I would be sure the patterns are in the magazines as the descriptions say nothing about the patterns.

Another in Steve Good's Stickman series.

Easy to cut.  Uses up smaller boards.

I finished cutting the first of many Steve Good's stickman (people?) patterns.

I cut this out of 1/4" alder and there is no stain or finish yet.  I think I will wait till I do more and finish them all together.  I did not stack cut these, but I plan to on others I may give away.

BTW, 5 points to anyone who tells me the title reference above and the music group!

General Scroll Saw Talk / Arm Lifter for the DeWalt Saw
« on: January 23, 2018, 08:27:40 pm »
Steve published a video today reviewing and using a new lifter arm for the DeWalt saw.

It is $33.00 at Bear Woods plus shipping (mine would be $8.00 for a total of $41.00.)

It looks pretty good, but....

I subscribe to this magazine last year and also got all the back issues.  A couple of weeks ago they made available a pattern for free to scroll and submit for a contest.

I did not win.

I used walnut for the wood and used padauk inlay for the heart and cupcake pieces.  I painted all the colored parts except the tree which I stained green with diluted food coloring.

Must be Christmas preparations!

The Coffee Shop / Buying on Amazon through Steve's links..
« on: December 18, 2017, 05:13:26 pm »
How can I be sure when I click a link on Steve's blog that he will be getting credit for the purchase?

For instance the micro drill bits he linked to today are not available, so if I find another one will he get the credit?
Also what if I jump away from the product or even the site and come back - what happens then?

The Coffee Shop / Hurricane Irma on the way
« on: September 09, 2017, 03:05:02 pm »
I am in Naples Fl and will be planning on leaving our house shortly.  Going to family nearby.  They are not out of the zone where the hurricane is predicted to go, but they are in a stronger house.  I am believing the 'cane will move further from the coast, but we are still going to get wind and rain.

Say a prayer for all those in the path of Irma where ever it may go.

General Scroll Saw Talk / My new DeWalt saw running problem.
« on: August 04, 2017, 09:28:07 pm »
I posted earlier about getting a new DeWalt saw under warranty.  see here:   http://www.stevedgood.com/community/index.php?topic=20132.0

Well I got the box opened and the first thing I did was check to see that the upper harm was straight.  It was.  But looking at the relationship between the upper an lower blade holder I found them to be out of alignment.  The lower holder was to the right of the upper one by at least a 16th of an inch, but closer to 1/8"!

I went online to find a solution and didn't find one. I told my wife I was not going to be sending it back to the service center!!!  So I tweaked it a bit here and there and got it pretty darn close.  I don't see an issue when it runs and the blade is now 90 degrees to the table.

Now I'm ready to turn it on!

I turn it on on the lowest setting and it is moving very slowly up and down (probably slow enough for Hotshot (Randy)!)  As I turned up the speed the steadiness of the slow speed was replaced by vibration between the 4 and 6 setting.  Moving on up the vibration slowly dissipated and it was stable at around 7.5 - 8.  I am not very happy about that, but I know this is a problem a lot of people have with the DeWalt.

My problem is the speed at the highest mark doesn't seem as fast as I remember on my old saw.  There is no way to check it and I couldn't find an answer (or video) online to help me.  What I am looking to find out is the speed the saw is actually going!  The SPM should be 1750 at the 8 setting.

I need to know if anyone has a way to verify the strokes per minute (SPM) on the saw?  If it is accurate then so be it, but if not then I'll have to contact DeWalt again. :'(

AS for the vibration I will anchor it to my bench to minimize it, but I think it wall always be there.  Something about harmonics I think.  When the saw it going certain speeds it will create this vibration.  (This is above my head for physics answers.)

I think I will figure out a way to put shock absorbers under the base of the saw to decrease the vibration.

By the way I can really observe the vibration by extending the articulated air tube away from the saw.

Any ideas for determining stroke speed?

General Scroll Saw Talk / Got a new DeWalt saw under warranty!
« on: August 04, 2017, 09:02:06 pm »
Well I got a new saw out of the problems I had.

I didn't want to say anything until the new saw was in hand!

I got a hold of DeWalt customer service (by phone) and they had not received a message I Emailed them regarding the problem (with photos).  I resent the photos, but they also told me they would have to talk to the manager of the service center and I should expect a response in a few days.  Well a Email to me a short time later said the manager would be out until the 31st. (Monday last)  (This conversation was on the 25th.)

So the next day I get a call at home from the service center and they apologized for the condition and said the shipper must have damaged it.   :o
He said he would warranty the saw and he got one ordered to be sent to me.  I packaged up the saw and Thursday they picked up and Friday it was delivered to the service center.

Yesterday I received the new saw!

I am happy with the customer service and I'm glad they took care of the problem.

On a side note:  I asked the service center rep why they etched the service order number on the housing of the motor and he said "they always do because not everyone saves their receipt".  I asked if I were to send a saw in the future could they put the number somewhere else? (Like under the stand housing?)  He said they could that I would just have to it them know.

I did find this explanation a bit bogus as the motor has a unique number and they would keep their own records which is all they would need!

Anyway I was happy to get a new saw now without the issues and now I'm ready to start cutting again......but can I?  I will post another topic regarding the new saw and it's operation.

Well a couple of weeks ago I sent my saw to a DeWalt Service Center to have the bent arm fixed (as I mentioned in another thread).  Well I got it back today and I am sorely disappointed.

1.  The arm is still not straight in line with the housing.
2.  The black housing on top is cracked where a screw was tightened too much.
3.  There are scratches on the bottom support bracket.
4.  There are scratches on the tensioner arm on top.
5.  The motor (get this) is scratched on the decal AND a number was etched onto the housing!
6.  The arm now shakes a lot at the speed I usually use!

(I will attempt to post pics when I get them from my phone to the computer and sized.)

Needless to say I am extremely upset and venting now here so I don't regret something I might say to the DeWalt Service Center!

I purposely sent the saw to a factory service center that has worked on scroll saws not a local one which has not!

I am off to get the pictures prepped.....

These are not mine so I will read no benefit from the sale.

This is a very good deal if you want back issues.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Creative-Woodworks-amp-Crafts-Magazine-29-Back-Issues-from-1998-2001-/362007766917?&_trksid=p2056016.l4276

29 issues for just under 40$.

If you are interested be sure to ask if the patterns are in the magazines.
