General Scroll Saw Talk / Ohio State Championship Plaque
« on: January 22, 2015, 01:57:26 pm »
Any suggestions on what wood types and overall size one would use on the Ohio State pattern. I know it is an individual choice but would be interested in others thoughts.

Thanks

Steve, how can I send you an email. The email me on the web site page doesn't give me an email address. Probably just my computer illiterate self.

General Scroll Saw Talk / My Biggest Goof Yet. Help
« on: April 17, 2012, 07:47:38 pm »
I have been making Steve's hummingbird clock for my daughter's birthdays and was spraying the clear finish on one today and noticed I glued one of the sides on upside down. The finish is 50/50 BLO/Mineral Spirits. I know in the past on one occasion I had glued a piece and caught it before I finished it and was able to put it in the microwave and take it apart. I am hesitant to do that in this case with the BLO/Mineral Spirits and clear spray on it. Anyone have any advise or do I just have a unique piece of firewood?

General Scroll Saw Talk / BLO/Mineral Spirits
« on: March 24, 2012, 06:14:57 pm »
I just finished my first project using BLO/Mineral Spirits mixed 50/50 at Dan's suggestion in another post. I have been a Lemon Oil finisher but love this method. It really makes the grain pop, the wood looks great. We can learn so much from this site.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Patterns to wood.
« on: October 11, 2011, 09:07:39 pm »
I am in the process of making multiples of one project and in place of using tons of paper to make patterns for each one I cut a pattern, multiple pieces, out of scrap and am tracing it and cutting. I really like cutting on the line on the wood better than the pattern glued to wood. Then it occurred to me that it would have been easier to just trace the pattern on to the wood using some type of carbon paper. What experience have you had doing this and is their a particular carbon paper that works better than others?

Ask Steve a question. / Glue Up Question
« on: August 05, 2011, 01:12:56 pm »
I am building a clock and intend to finish it by dipping in lemon oil and then spraying a clear finish. The clock is the hummingbird  pattern and I presume you dipped it in lemon oil per your usual finish procedure. My question is did you glue it prior to gluing or did you do the glue up first and then dip it. If glue up and then dip I worry about putting in the clock insert when all the finish work is completed. I have the inserts fitting snugly and worry trying to push them in the assembled piece could be a problem. My first experience with clock inserts so a little unsure how I want to proceed. Thanks for the help.

Ask Steve a question. / Clock Insert
« on: July 15, 2011, 10:32:48 pm »
I went to the Woodcraft site looking for the clock insert you used in the humming bird clock and no longer find 142320. I have never used an insert and notice they have several other 2 3/4" clocks which would work in terms of the clock circumference. However the one I like says it needs a depth of 13/16. I assume that since the front of this clock is cut from 1/4 but has several inches behind it that the clock will work. Again, I have no experience with clock inserts and thought I would ask the question rather than order something I can't use.
Thanks, Gary

General Scroll Saw Talk / Framed Cuttings
« on: June 17, 2011, 05:22:29 pm »
Just wondering if you always use glass or something clear in front of framed cuttings? If so what do you use besides glass, so often glass makes the protect heavy. I have put them under glass and sometimes used no covering and got to wondering what others do.

Pattern Requests. / Diving Pattern
« on: February 21, 2011, 05:25:53 pm »
My grandson competed in his second state diving final over the weekend and I would like to cut something out he could keep as a reminder of his accomplishment. I would like it to say:

Texas State 2011
High School Diving Championships
Alex Happe
6th

General Scroll Saw Talk / A Fjinish Question
« on: January 21, 2011, 12:16:57 pm »
I am going to make some picture frames. My question is what do you recommend as a finish, they are to be made of cedar. I normally use Steve's lemon oil dip technique and it may well be the best way to go with the cedar. I have no experience with finishing cedar and would be interested in your input.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Blade Question
« on: December 01, 2010, 05:18:45 pm »
I am cutting out some of the 3D Christmas ornaments and the top portion of my blade is getting to the end of the cut before the bottom part of the cut. In other words if I stop the cut when the top part of the blade has finished I still have a distance to go on the bottom. I have never experienced this problem before, anyone have any thoughts. I am pushing the blade to the back of the blade holder, both top and bottom. I am using a DeWalt 788. is there a blade clamp adjustment maybe?

Ask Steve a question. / Enlarging Pattern
« on: June 07, 2010, 05:07:28 pm »
Steve I need help enlarging patterns made on your scrollsaw pattern maker. I can enlarge the letter sizes while in the pattern but when I print they all come out the same size. I am so computer illiterate it's frightening. Hope I have made the question clear.

Thanks, Gary

Ask Steve a question. / Tensioning On DeWalt 788
« on: May 10, 2010, 06:08:47 pm »
My tensioning lever doesn't seem to be getting the blade as tight as it once did. Is there an adjustment I can make to tighten it up.\
Thanks Gary
