General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Since I'm Waiting

No glass most of the time for me. I feel like covering warm wood with cold glass is a bit like covering a nice sofa in a clear plastic cover.
To me, glass is for photos. Another way to look at it is that you rarely see oil paintings sandwiched behind glass. It takes away from viewing the texture of the painting.

This is one I'm working on now. It's a Bicentenial in the limited 40% silver proof. I don't use a scroll saw though. This is being cut by hand with a jewelers saw.

It's also true that it is not in any way illegal. It's a really common missconseption though. Title 18 of the US code swtates that altering with the intent to defraud is illegal. Fraud being the key word. In fact, the treasury gets asked so many times that they made a special statement on their web page that says roughly, Colorizing, cutting, etc, for art or jewelry while not encouraged, there shall be no sanction.

That's why those penny crushers are legal.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Re: is this normal with spiral blades
« on: September 15, 2014, 11:07:53 am »
That's one of the things I dislike about Spirals. They cut Slooooooow. It's really noticeable when your used to cutting with nice blades like Flying Dutchman ultra reverse and then try spirals for the first time.

I think I had been using good Flying Dutchman flat blades for at least 5 years before I tried my first spiral. The first time I tried them, I thought my saw was broken LOL. ;D

That said, I do use spirals now and then when the project calls for it due to size or if I want the specific veining effect that spirals are really good at.

Computer questions / Re: Anyone need this computer info ??
« on: September 15, 2014, 10:58:44 am »
I despise companies that use tricks to sneak their software onto your system. McAfee is one of them and for that reason alone I wont use them. For example, whenever there is a Java Runtime update, you have to be careful and uncheck "Install McAfee". They piggyback on Java updates and installing McAfee is the default that you have to opt out of. Many times I've had to remove the sneaky McAfee from friends and families computers because of that and the problems it causes. Esprcially since they already have antivirus installed.

Plus, like DW stated, McAfee and Norton are major resource hogs and more bloated than necessary.

I'm not sure I like the no Youtube or Facebook advise. That's kind of like saying you can protect your car by never taking it out of the neighborhood. Youtube can be a great and entertaining resource. I even use them for music tutorials. Even Steve Good here has his videos on Youtube.

I'm not personally a computer expert, but I worked for years in electronics engineering with programers and software developers. Most of them hated McAfee and Norton too.

I tend to switch around antivirus from year to year depending on what get's the best ratings from security experts.  Kaspersky often rates very high. Currently, I'm using Vipre antivirus and have Bittdefender on my wife's computer.

When you click print and the print dialog pops up, check the box marked fit to page. Sometimes it's called scale to fit depending on which version of Windows you use.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Sanding Mop?

Those Klingspor mops are awesome. I use them constantly, and for more than just scrollsaw work. I even keep the worn out ones and use them to buff stuff with. Even things like aluminum or steel. I just wish they weren't so expensive.

No where is there a rule that you can only use on type of blade on a project.  I use what does the best job and most of the time that is spirals.  Below you will see a project called Drinking Wolf.  The top part is all straight flat blades because mostly branches are that way.  The bottom half is water so it looks better using spirals.  I would say the majorities of the projects I have done, with the exception of intarsia, even then some of the veins are spirals, are a mixture of blades.

Yes, I completely agree! To me, a spiral can give one effect and a standard blade another effect. That's why I compared it to artist brushes, and sometimes use spirals in specific parts of a piece for the effect.

Beautiful job.  What did you use for a backer.

Thanks!
On slabs like this one, I use stiff rigid felt that I get at Micheal's Craft Shop. I'd feel funny putting Baltic birch plywood on the back of gorgeous wood.  Not only that, but I've never been able to get as deep and flat of a black with paint.
