Brag Forum / I'm so pleased!
« on: July 30, 2015, 02:05:01 pm »
Just wanted to share something cool. The Charles Dearing deer in a live edge maple slab that I posted here last year made it into the gallery of Fall issue of ScrollSaw Woodworking magazine!!

I was shocked when I saw it in the issue I got in the mail today  8)

I figured I'd post this one since I haven't seen anyone else post it yet.

Quick afternoon project today - Steve's "Jazz Band" I liked it when I saw it in my inbox when he posted it the other day. Nice simple relaxing piece.

Brag Forum / Deer in live edge maple slab (Charles Dearing)
« on: August 26, 2014, 12:44:36 pm »
Just finished up this one. It's one of Charles Dearing's great patterns.

This was the last piece of a rough cut maple slab that I've had lying around for about 6 years. It's figured maple with some burl features in it. I used the rest back then and finally decided to use this last one. I gave it a fresh run through the planer and the bark on the left side stayed in tact. There's even a little fuzzy green moss still on some of the bark.  8) The pictured don't capture the iridescent flame in the wood, especially down by the body and foot print.

The base is walnut and the removable drop in style I usually make for this kind of thing.

This one happens to be a gift, but I'm curious.
I've made several different things like this on live edge slabs like this and I've been asked several times by people about making one for them to buy.

What would you all think something like this should sell for? I know it can vary greatly between craft fair versus gallery, etc, but what would you ask for this one for example? Don't worry, you won't hurt my feeling a bit if you say 20 bucks, LOL  ;D

Brag Forum / The Toucan Wooden Clock
« on: August 02, 2014, 10:56:20 pm »
Finally finished my clock project that I started over the winter. The clock is completely built from scratch. It's made entirely out of wood except for brass rods and tubes uses as shafts and axles and a hand wound magnet and sensing coil, wound with 400 feet of magnet wire.

Plans and blueprints were designed by Clayton Boyer.

Here's a link to a quick 30 second video of it in action:

Brag Forum / Not a scroll saw project - Custom acoustic guitar
« on: June 29, 2014, 10:52:18 am »
I've always wanted to make my own guitar, but it's so intimidating!I finally went for it. Took over a month, but I'm limited on how much I can do at a time due to health issues.

I made this from a partial kit. When I say kit though, I use the term loosely. I got pre-bent sides and a very rough shaped neck along with wood materials and a bag of hardware. Other than that, it's all from scratch. I used Hawaiian Koa wood and the pictures don't do the wood justice. It's almost iridescent in the light.

First link is to the finished pictures:

And the second link is the build process pictures:

Introduce Yourself. / Hi there!
« on: July 02, 2010, 10:32:55 am »
Just realized I signed up here sometime ago and never introduced myself. My name is Ray and I've been scrolling for several years along with various other wood working. I'm not a huge forum poster and tend to read a lot more than I post, but I will post things from time to time. I recognize many of you from another forum.

I've always appreciated Steve and his blog. Steve impressed me greatly when he took the time to send me a video clip of his saw, showing the front to back blade travel on his Dewalt so that I could compare it to mine. Mine was awful and he agreed when he saw the video I sent him. I fixed mine and all is great now.

I scroll mostly fretwork and intarsia. More fretwork than intarsia though. I don't sell much, but plan to this year hopefully. The last thing I cut was Steve's Dollar Bill puzzle along with the matching box and I just did that yesterday. My wife and I are heading to Lake George for a week tomorrow, so I'll start back scrolling after I get back and maybe post some pics.

Looking forward to reading more here!
