Brag Forum / Some work from me......finally
« on: October 03, 2010, 08:01:57 pm »
I haven't posted any work here in quite awhile so I thought I would show some now.
I entered a contest on another site for making "Salt & Pepper Shakers". Not having a lathe, of course I had to make mine using my scroll saw.
The are fairly simple and not at all hard to make but, I enjoyed the challange and got a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and a 6th place finish.
Hope you enjoy seeing them and it sparks someone into thinking "Outside The Lines".

The first one I made is made of maple and I call it "The Pot Belly Stove".

Number two is cherry and it is called "The Apple Core".

For my third try, I went back to my old stand by, plywood. It is "The Square Egg"

On the fourth, a friend gave me some zebra wood and I got crazy on the design. It ended up looking more like "Tiger wood" So I called it "The Orental".

Hope you enjoy them and all comments good or bad welcome.

Brag Forum / My latest project

This is a Christmas gift for my son who plays in a band and at Church. (Just don't tell him! ;)

It is cherry and walnut finished with wipe-on pollyurethane.
Hope you enjoy it.

It is 18" tall and 6" wide. it has a piece at the top for hanging on the wall. I used wire for the frets and strings. Getting the clock works and strings on at the sme time was a bit fiddly but, it works!  ;D

Pattern Requests. / Pattern books
« on: September 08, 2010, 11:21:15 am »
Yesterday, in the mail, I received two books of patterns that can be ordered. Well, they are really just small catalogs, one is called the "Windfield Collection" and the other is "Scroller".
I DID NOT order these catalogs, Scroller has a cover price of $3.95 and Windfield Collections is $3.00.
It seems to me the prices are a bit high but, there are some very good patterns in them.
Did anyone else on this fourm receive these?
I am just wondering if belonging to this website had something to do with my getting these catalogs or if maybe ordering some of my blades and wood from outher places had something to do with it.
I do not order things on line, I usually call the places that I order from but, how did they get my name and address?
Just courious....

Brag Forum / Just a 'little' scrolling on this one
« on: August 26, 2010, 01:50:47 pm »
Our son ask me to make some signs for their church in Manhattan, Ks. so I gave it a try.

A little scrolling.....

A little frame making....

And the finished project up close....

I cut the lettering in 1/4" burch ply and glued it to another piece painted black. I made the frame/legs out of cedar and applyed 3 coats of Spar Urethane for weather protection. and then covered the signs with plexiglass on both sides for protection from the elements.
As I said it is not much scrolling but more than I've had time for for a long while.

The Coffee Shop / A good shot!
« on: August 06, 2010, 01:52:13 pm »
Vic stood over his tee shot on the 450 yard 18th hole  for what seemed to be an eternity. He waggled, stood, waggled, backed off, steped up, and waggled again for several minutes.
Finally Jim said, "What's the problem?"
"My wife is watching me from the balcony on the club house and, I want to make a pefect shot." replied Vic.
"Get serious!" said Jim."You can't hit her from here!!!"

Brag Forum / Christmas gifts
« on: July 24, 2010, 04:50:37 pm »
As usual, I used one of Steves patterns, "Party Trays", and modified it a bit. These will be Christmas gifts for our daughter and son and my brother. (set of 6 each).
They are oak with mineral oil to pop the grain and 3 coats of shellac for a bit of shine and easy cleaning. Both the mineral oil and shellac are very food safe.
I used 3/4" red oak from the big box store. I got 9 trays out of each 1" x 8" x 8'-0" board and two boards cost about $75.00. Sounds expensive but at $25.00 each for gifts, I don't think it is too bad.

Brag Forum / Another Jesus cross
« on: July 04, 2010, 03:07:15 pm »
There have been several crosses shown on this site. I thought that I would show you one of mine.

It started with an idea that my brother saw of a larger version some place and grew from there.
I later did a larger one for a music stand for a young Christian singer but, I had to use a jig saw for that one.  :D

Brag Forum / Not much scrolling
« on: July 04, 2010, 02:56:02 pm »
There is not much scrollsawing here but, thought you might like to see another of my crazy ideas.
It is solid oak with polyurethane finish. I cut it about two years ago.

Most of it was cut on the table saw except for the buckle of course. Yes, I have worn it but, it is not very comfey.
It is all wood, no metal in it, the sections are hinged with pieces of  oak dowel rod.
Guess I'm just wierd because nothing seem worth while unless I think outside the lines.  :D

Brag Forum / Not fret work
« on: June 27, 2010, 12:38:09 pm »
We seem to have alot of fret work on this site. Not that that is a BAD thing but, I thought that I would show that other things can be done with a scrollsaw.
Some time back, Steve showed how to make a vase on his blog and I got real excited about that so, I made a few. Here are some.

This is Canary wood.

The left one is oak and the right one is oak with some walnut added.

As you know, I think "Outside the lines" alot and some of this wood gets expensive so I tryed something else......

Plywood!

Well, lets not stop there!!!!!

Lets make a pitcher out of plywood!

Well,Go for broke!!

This is my "Super Bowl".... 11" across and 6" tall

Now you know why I call my shop "Out Side The Lines" ;D

I just noticed your post in the "Introduce Yourself" section.
I see you are from Garden City! You are the first person on the fourm that I've seen from Kansas!
I am Roger Sullivan and live in Hutchinson. Would love to meet you sometime. I seldom get out west beyond Dodge City but, if you ever get this way, please let me know and maybe we can make arrangements to meet some place.
Do you ever come to Hutchinson for the State Fair or anything?

Ask Steve a question. / Disposal
« on: June 07, 2010, 01:34:42 pm »
Getting rid of sawdust and scrap wood is not a problem...Just put it in the dumpster, land fill, or incenerator. (even the fire place if you have one ;)) But, what do you do with the bent, broken and burned-up blades? They can be sharp and dangerous to some unsuspecting person, and hurt them.  :( >:(
I have even "stabbed" my self just disposing of them.  >:(
So what is the safest way of getting rid of old blades (even razor blades) that you use?

Introduce Yourself. / I live in Kansas
« on: April 19, 2010, 10:13:26 am »
Hi everyone. I am a retired 66 year old man. I have been scrolling for about 7 or 8 years as a hobby. I am on my third saw now, I wish I knew how meny blades I have used. Ha Ha
I have a small shop and I do alot of wood working of all types just as a hobby but, I have had a few customer jobs for everything from a garden bench and music stands to cedar chests and crosses.
I do most of my scrolling in the winter but, I have a scroll job coming up for my sons church. They need signs for directing people to various parts if the church.
I hope this fourm does well because we all can learn something from others every day.
