General Scroll Saw Talk / Stickman Steve
« on: June 18, 2018, 08:30:41 am »
Steve Good has an amazing imagination combined with an exceptional story telling gift and enjoys sharing this gift with us. This js a nice thing he does.  Perhaps he is just lonely and is creating these stick people for company as blog posting have slowed down.

I am presently working on the Stickman Chess project, building two sets at once. If I figure out how to post pictures I may share it with everyone.

Have a good day folks

I also have a Dewalt and not been concerned about the back and forth movement. On tight turn I slow down and back of on my in feed pressure.

Welcome Rob Z from Texas

I am Norm from Nipawin, Saskatchewan, a community that is about 2000 klicks north of you.
Drove down to the State of Texas a few years back, then followed the Rio Grande from Brownsville to El Paso, spending time in Great Bend National Park taking about 6 weeks to enjoy that part of the world. I would love to visit again but retirement income is a factor. So, for now, I will be satisfied with the memory and oodles of pictures.

I started scrolling with a Dremal then went a Dewalt 788 type 1 big difference. I use Pegas, flying Dutchmen and Sawbird blades; a brand sold by Grant Hall, an individual mail order supplier operator and designer of Intarsia plans. if you are interested google grant or Sawbird and check out his we. These brands are much superior and cheaper than the home depot type stores sell even with the shipping

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Wooden Utensils
« on: June 09, 2018, 08:31:10 am »
A fellow woodsy guy gave us a spatula made from butternut we use it for making porridge about 3 times a week. There is no finish at all and it has survived for many years, although it is discoloured from the blueberries that go into the porridge and the scraper part is a little tattered it still has years of use in it. We don't put it in the dishwasher nor soak for long periods , but rinse it off and let it dry.

I did read that a superior finish for wood utensils is a 3 or 4 day soak in watco oil then let hang for 3 months as that long of soak will need a long time to air out and off gas will make hard wood kitchen spoons preserve them under any conditions.

I have made strip type cutting boards from maple, walnut and basswood, used a mineral type oil or watco oil, applying  several coats. with varying results but eventually warping, separating or cracking will happen under rough usage. Maybe watco oil is a mineral as I think from nuts of some kind.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Better bulb for dewalt
« on: May 31, 2018, 08:35:52 am »
I don't have the regular dewalt but a desk/ work light. I left my light on, the goose neck sagged dropping the bulb to close to the blower tube and burnt a hole in it. good thing I was in the shop as it could cause a fire. So Led would probably be safer

I don't use a foot switch but think about once in a while. I would get a headache trying to decide what to use so maybe I'll just go and scroll.

I remember the floor dimmer switch and the ticket I got when I couldn't find it.

thanks for letting me follow your discussion

The big challenge in wood art is not the unblemished pieces one makes but developing the skill to be able to learn how to correct our mistakes or make our oomps a part of the finished piece with little or no effect on the final product. An old cabinet maker some 65 years ago told me that when I helped him put kitchen cupboards  in my parents home. === Then here is always the designer firewood pile

I upgraded from Dremel to Dewalt. feature I really like is the Dewalt arm lifts giving more room to insert blade into entry holes as well as the blade tensioner is up front so I don't have to reach to the back of the saw to tension the blade.  If I was to upgrade, the Seyco looks good as it can cut thicker stock which would be good for making boxes, but I am not sure it is sold in Canada. I hear Hawk and Hegner would also be something to look into

I am working on the hockey players stickmen using 1/4 inch Baltic birch. I like birch ply as it is very strong in all directions, finishes well and blade follows the lines quite well. I have the stick chess patterns for my next project

Welcome Skip Curt, scrollers and carvers are most enjoyable people and so willing to share experience, knowledge and a good joke. I live in Nipawin Saskatchewan, we are the northern fringe of the grain producers and next to the Northern Forest.

My shop is my go to place and I scroll out a few gems and a lot of designer firewood.
