Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Re: peel and stick

I use peel and stick  on most cuttings. Putting it on the bottom of a picture puzzle increases blade life, no burning and makes the binding tape much easier to peel of.

I am no expert but heard of using a diluted white glue painted on to help stabilize the wood. Some glues can be diluted with water or mixed in with a Spar or Poly varnish. even the varnish will help stabilize it

The rot should not get any worse if it is not exposed to moisture.

Like Toneman, I have been busy with yard work and at 74 my work time between rest time is getting shorter. Here in Nipawin Saskatchewan our winters are long and our summers are beautiful and growth is rapid. This takes me out of the shop. but I did cut out a carving blank and set by the carving tools as well as prepared some scrolling patterns onto Baltic ply just in case we get a rainy day. As I walked passed my Dewalt the other day,I gave it a friendly stroke on the table top; I swear I heard a very quiet giggle from her.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Just ordered a new DeWalt saw!

I think you are a wise man. You went through the process of determining the best route; was not afraid to ask questions and when your decision was made; you acted with out hesitation. Dewalt is still a primary saw for guys like us and the price is something we can live with. Scrolling is an addiction that needs to be tended to other wise we go into withdrawal. I don't know if there is a 12 step program for scrollers who's life has become unmanageable and I am really not interested in finding out. Happy scrolling.

I suspect there is an armature issue, or one of the field coils is lazy. If the armature has a shiny section it may be rubbing on the field coils. or, there could be broken winding wires hidden inside the coils, worn out bearings could cause this condition or the crushed washer you found may have damaged the windings. An electric motor rewind shop would be able to diagnos this. to fix that would be a new motor. A new motor from Dewalt would probably be quite pricy..

My first saw was a Dremal, still have it sitting in the corner taking up space, Had blower problems changed bellows but it neer really blew enough air to my satisfaction. Solved the problem with an air pump from a fish tank. just snap tied it to the upper arm of the saw and taped the small air tube to the existing blower tube. worked like a charm

The Coffee Shop / Re: Shipping??? I mean, Really????

I really feel thankful that I stumbled onto the Scroll Saw Workshop site a year ago. The pattern site is priceless for me. I view it often and download many patterns during the last year. In fact the community forum has become a daily ritual with me. Steve does not charge for the download patterns, this is a wonderful resource for a retired person on a limited pension. I do , however, donate to this site to help maintain it as I would not want it to disappear even though a $25.00 donation in American money translates to $38.00 dollars Canadian. Just a price to do business. The pattern sites that charge rather expensive fees for a pattern and shipping costs rarely get a view from me. It is not unusual for them to tack on extra high fee to ship to Canada. The advertised sites in Scroll Saw Workshop are not gougers and I have no objection to what they charge and the money exchange rate is standard. My buying standard is to first buy Canadian, then American. I do buy my blades from Sawbird, a Canadian distributer of quality blades but am tempted to try the Pegas or Flying Dutchman blades from companies that support Steve's site.
Enough rambling, just really wanted to say hi and thank you for being such a good resource.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Cedar Wood
« on: December 16, 2016, 02:44:49 pm »
I live in Northern Saskatchewan, cedar does grow naturally in our area but is easily obtained from lumberyards. I love the look of it and is very easy to work with, for carving it holds detail fairly well and for intarsia it moulds easily to the needed shapes. I use it very little because I have a severe sensitivity to the dust and fumes; I have even tried air supplied breathing apparatus and can still get a reaction so I look for other woods. Locally grown pine, spruce, polar and birch are the inexpensive types of wood in this area and they all scroll so nicely. thanks for the opportunity to share
