The Coffee Shop / Re: 2012 Christmas Ornament Exchange
« on: November 16, 2012, 11:54:13 pm »
Question: If we get our ornament from whomever is sending it, do we have somewhere to post and say thank you and then share with everyone what we got?

The Coffee Shop / Never Know Who You Will Meet
« on: November 15, 2012, 08:31:49 pm »
I was driving around in Mesa, AZ making my hospice pharmacy deliveries when I came upon a huge yard sale. Well, I love them there things, so I stopped to browse. They had a Skil Scroll Saw for sale for $50. Sure wish I had the money. Well one thing led to another and the guy running the sale told me his neighbor across the street did some scroll work. It so happened that he was working in his garage at that time. So I went on over and introduced myself. (I'm not a bit shy) He was more than happy to show me his shop and his work. He is currently making two huge clocks with tons of fret work and pieces. So, I ended up making a new scroll friend. He said to come by anytime and he would give me some tips or show me some things I can do. He says he comes on here from time to time under the name wood pappy...but I haven't seen him. Still it was pretty cool running into him, and did I say I sure wish I had $50 for that darn saw.

The Coffee Shop / Don't You Just Hate Broken Wood!
« on: November 03, 2012, 10:06:09 pm »
I was working on one of my Christmas Ornaments (not the one for my exchange) and it was looking pretty good. Had it all cut and was peeling the pattern off when one part of it snapped in half.  :'( I sure hate when projects break, but I guess that is one way to keep me humble. I did have a good day in the shop and my other 3 projects turned out super.  :) Sigh, there is always tomorrow.

I am trying to glue the piece back and hoping it holds good....if so I can finish it and it will be painted. Amazing how much of a mistake paint can cover.

The Coffee Shop / Sometimes I feel like a Butt

I brought a friend of mine over to show him how to work on the scroll saw. He picked out a pattern to make the angel holding a candle. He worked so hard on it, and it was really looking good. Trying to get the base to fit the main piece I helped him by tapping it a few times...one time too many. The right side wing flew off his beautiful project. Lucky for me my friend has a good temperament. After holding my head to the sander for a few minutes he calmed down and said it was no problem. LOL...actually he took it pretty good. So, now we have an excuse to get together so he can make this project a 2nd time.

Brag Forum / Car Mirror Hanger Jesus Cross
« on: October 20, 2012, 10:05:56 pm »
I made this cross about 3 in tall and hung it for my wife's car mirror. My original idea was to make it into a cross necklace. My wife thought it was a bit big for that purpose. So for now it is a mirror hanger.

Brag Forum / Another Christmas Gift Scrolls off the Machine
« on: October 20, 2012, 07:28:06 pm »
I was so happy with yesterday's success of the project I made for my dad that today I went out and made a gift for my step mom. I used a piece of burn walnut. I get them for $2.50 a piece at the local Woodworkers Source. (never know when you might want a piece of burl walnut) The base is a left over piece of regular walnut. I think it turned out nice. I love using my spiral blades.

The Coffee Shop / Site Appreciation
« on: October 20, 2012, 07:21:24 pm »
I just want to say how much I really appreciate this scrollsaw site. It has helped me so much in the past 6 months as I work to learn my new hobby. Honestly without it I doubt I would be working so much with my saw and doing half the things I have done.

I got a wood lathe about 11 years ago. I worked on it for 2 years teaching myself how to use it. I love my lathe, but it isn't easy learning when you have no one to help or encourage you. Don't get me wrong, my wife encourages me for all I do, but she doesn't know anything about these tools.

After 2 years of working with a lathe I made about 5 or 6 projects and that is all. Then my lathe had to be put into storage for 9 years while we lived in places which did not have the accommodations to work with it. Now I have it out and thought I would just hop on the computer and go to a site similar to this on for wood turners.

Well, sad thing is there is not a site even close to what this one does. Most the sites are local and most all of them want you to pay some yearly membership fee to their association. It is a sad thing for wood turners that they don't have such a site. But for us scroll saw enthusiasts, I love this site and we are lucky to have it. Thanks Steve Good.

Brag Forum / Western Hat Key Holder
« on: October 19, 2012, 11:11:09 pm »
I took this design from the pattern page here. Cut it with 1/8 in ply wood. Then I put it on some walnut. Before I cut the outer shape I glued the ply onto the walnut then cut them together. I also stained the walnut with poly simi gloss, 2 coats. Then when I stained the ply I used oak stain. It also added a nice look on the walnut.

This is a gift I made for my dad for Christmas. I added 3 metal hooks for the keys. Not the best cutting, but I learned some things and ultimately I think a lot of my prayers were answered, because this will work for a gift.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Ornament to paint or not to paint
« on: October 13, 2012, 12:36:30 am »
I am making some ornaments. Some of them I know will not be painted, but some I want to paint. What is the best way to paint ornaments? I was thinking spray painting would be fast and easy, but not sure if it will be as good as hand painting using acrylic paint. Any ideas?

The Coffee Shop / The Genie
« on: October 12, 2012, 12:38:51 am »
Three women are all shipwrecked on an island (not the same one with the Scotsman). They find a magic genie lamp. After rubbing the lamp the genie says that normally he grants 3 wishes for a person, but since there are 3 of them they each can have one wish. Well the first woman, a red head, says she wished she was at a nice New England estate. Poof...she was gone. Next the Brown Haired lady stated she wished she was on a beach in Hawaii....poof she was gone. This left the 3rd lady, a natural blonde. The genie looked at her and said, "Well, your friends have both had their wishes granted, your wish is my command." The blonde spoke and said, I don't know what to wish for. I really miss my friends. I wish they were here to help me decide......Poof. Her wish was granted.

The Coffee Shop / Lathe Time
« on: October 12, 2012, 12:31:56 am »
I got a wood lathe about 11 years ago. Used it for about 2 years then we moved into an apartment. From there we moved to a condo. Now finally I am in a house with a place to put my lathe. Think I will try to do something using both the lathe and my scroll saw. Getting the lathe from storage on Saturday.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Eclipse Scroll Saw
« on: October 04, 2012, 01:57:58 am »
I have been doing a bit of research on various scroll saws. I saw a man at the Arizona State Fair about 15 years ago. He had some kind of scroll saw he was using and selling. It was supposed to be very good. I think it was an eclipse but i could be wrong. I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the Eclipse Brand Scroll Saws.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Record Puzzle
« on: September 16, 2012, 02:01:06 pm »
I was watching an episode of American Pickers the other night. While they were picking through some old barn they came upon an old record puzzle. The concept was that in the mid 1900's a record had been made with pictures of singers on it. That was in turn cut into a puzzle. This whole concept was quite intriguing to me. Been thinking of a way to make some records into a puzzle like the one I saw. Anyone here ever seen such a thing?
