The Bathtub Test

During a visit to my doctor, I asked him, "How do you determine whether
Or not an older person should be put in an old age home?"

"Well," he said, "we fill up a bathtub, then we offer a teaspoon, a
Teacup and a bucket to the person to empty the bathtub."

"Oh, I understand," I said. "A normal person would use the bucket
Because it is bigger than the spoon or the teacup."

"No" he said. "A normal person would pull the plug. Do you want a bed
              Near the window?"

ARE YOU GOING TO PASS THIS ON . OR DO YOU WANT THE
              BED NEXT TO MINE?

The Coffee Shop / Senior Alphabet

The Senior Alphabet:

A's for arthritis; B's the bad back, C's the chest pains, perhaps car-di-ac?

D is for dental decay and decline, E is for eyesight, can't read that top line!

F is for fissures and fluid retention, G is for gas which I'd rather not mention.

H high blood pressure--I'd rather it low; I for incisions with scars you can show.

J is for joints, out of socket, won't mend, K is for knees that crack when they bend.

L 's for libido, what happened to sex? M is for memory, I forget what comes next.

N is neuralgia, in nerves way down low; O is for osteo, bones that don't grow!

P for prescriptions, I have quite a few, just give me a pill and I'll be good as new!

Q is for queasy, is it fatal or flu? R is for reflux, one meal turns to two.

S is for sleepless nights, counting my fears, T is for Tinnitus; bells in my ears!

U is for urinary; troubles with flow; V for vertigo, that's 'dizzy,' you know.

W for worry, now what's going 'round? X is for X ray, and what might be found.

Y for another year I'm left here behind, Z is for zest I still have-- in my mind!

I've survived all the symptoms, my body's deployed.

I keep twenty-six doctors fully employed!

Very moving.  Japan woke a sleeping giant in 1941 and I think maybe the giant is waking again.

This box isn't big enough for me to list all my jobs.  The most fun one was wrangler on a dude ranch in Colorado.  4 yrs in USN then college and taught public school for 18 yrs.  Had my own antique shop then became a technical writer (procedure manuals) for a national motel chain.  Finally had a craft supply business (wholesale and retail).  Worked part time at Home Depot for 5 yrs before moving to MO and have been working for the Census since Feb. although that is about over.  Turn 71 this year so maybe it is time to retire for good although they are trying to sign me up as either a substitute teacher or substitute mail carrier.

I would be surprised if you got Baltic Birch at HD.  Their 1/4 Birch is only 3 ply whereas Baltic Birch is 5 ply and will but totally different.  You might try stacking the 1/4 in 3's and see if that helps.

Great idea.  I found some pine frames at Hobby Lobby and Jo-Anns that were wide enough to scroll designs along the borders.  They were also unfinished.

The internet and digital cameras were not around when I started but my first projects were personalized Christmas ornaments that were dated.  I sent them to family members in place of cards and had a new design each year.

It sounds like what you have is birch but not Baltic Birch.  You might try stacking 2 of the 3/16" pieces and use a reverse tooth flat blade and see if you can get better results.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Scroll Saw Magazines
« on: April 23, 2010, 09:51:34 am »
I have had a subscription to both magazines since 94.  Just received my renewal for Scrollsaw Woodworking & Crafts and don't think I will renew for the same reasons as stated before (too much intarsia and not enough real scrolling).  Much prefer Creative Woodworks and Crafts.

My dust collection system is the floor which then becomes softer to walk on and is insulated from the cold. ;D

I have been scrolling for a coon's age.  My first experience was over 50 yrs ago with a coping saw.  Have been using power equipment since the 70's.  Do mostly fretwork.

Ask Steve a question. / Re: removing rust
« on: April 19, 2010, 07:46:53 am »
I have found the most effective rust removal to be Naval Jelly applied with fine steel wool.  Once cleaned, then apply a coating of paste wax (not automotive) and buff.  Makes the surface extremely slick.
