Hi Peggy and welcome to the forum.  They are all right.  Just go up a size and you should be fine.  You should be able to get a pretty fine fretwork with a #3.

I talked a buddy of mine into the Porter Cable because it was rated the best saw in it's price range.  I have used it a few times to show him things.  It's way better than my first saw, which was a Dremel.  It's not bad.

Hi and welcome to the forum.  I'm Julie from Texas.  If you go to the back of the lumber department in Home Depot, you will find a rack of culled lumber.  It's extremely cheap and will work just fine for your practice.  I have even found poplar and oak back there that is great for us scrollers since we need smaller pieces, not full boards.  I recommend you start with a board and draw some lines on it.  Straight, wavy, zigzag, whatever.  Use any blade you want.  Try them all.  You need to get a feel for your saw and find out which blades "feel" right for you.  We are all different.  I don't recommend buying blades from any hardware store.  They are more expensive and substandard blades.  Order some Flying Dutchman or Olson Blades.  The blades can make all the difference in you control and cutting.  Mikes workshop sells a variety pack of Flying Dutchman  blades so you can get a feel for the different types of blades.  Good luck and enjoy.

Hi Laura and welcome to the forum.  I'm Julie from Texas.  I used to work for the Home Depot and had to do demos on the Ryobi scrollsaw at Christmas time.  Let me start by saying that there are no good pinned blades out there and generally the pinless ones you can buy from hardware stores are sub standard.  Order some Flying Dutchman or Olson blades.  They will cost you half of what the hardware store blades cost even with shipping.  I have seen the most amazing projects come off of inexpensive saws.  It just takes practice.  I started on a Dremel myself.  I have had an EX21 for about 15 years.  The benefits of a good saw are ease of use, less vibration and many other little thing that will make your life easier but buying an inexpensive saw so you can see if you enjoy the hobby is a good idea.  We are all eager to help so ask away.  Glad you're here.

Hello and welcome to the forum.  I'm Julie from Texas.  I've tried every blade out there I think and have always gone back to Flying Dutchman and Olson blades.  It all depends on what you are cutting and the thickness of your wood but I use #3, 5 and 7 reverse tooth blades on the vast majority of my projects.  For portraits, I use spiral blades.  A lot of people don't like spirals but on big projects that you can't turn on your table, they are a valuable tool in your tool box.  They do take some practice but are very effective when you get the hang of them.  The wooden teddy bear sells the Flying Dutchman blades and I get my Olson blades from Seyco.  You used to be able to get a sample pack of flying Dutchman blades when Mike at Mikes workshop sold them but he retired.  I don't know if it is still available through the wooden teddy bear.  I stocked up before he retired so I haven't had to order any.  You got one heck of a deal on the saw.  Enjoy it.
