Ask Steve a question. / Personal messages
« on: August 26, 2014, 09:34:45 am »
Russ, Steve, Ed...anybody...
I sent a member a personal message a couple days ago and have not heard back.  I was wondering, with the new layout, how one knows they have a personal message.  Before, your messages were listed in the upper right side of the page when you pulled up the forum.  Does the "My Messages" tab light up when you have a message?  Someone, please send me a personal message so I know.  Thanks...julie

« on: June 20, 2013, 08:36:10 am »
For all those wondering about the bamboo tablet...Woot has a refurmished one for $49.99 today.  I've been looking at them and couldn't justify the price just to see if it worked for me.  I'll give it a try at that price.

The Coffee Shop / Good things come to those who wait!
« on: December 25, 2012, 07:29:36 am »
Yesterday's mail brought a special suprise from Jim in Brighton, MI.  Two beautiful ornaments and a special treat.  A hand carving of the old elf himself in overalls.  It is a great treasure.  I promise he wont be put up with the Christmas ornaments.  He will go on the shelf to enjoy all year.  Thank you so very much, Jim.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Metal pin???
« on: July 11, 2011, 09:04:23 am »
My sister recently asked me to duplicate a pin she lost a couple of years ago.  She found someone who had one like it and gave me a xerox copy of it.  It is the 3 wise men, camels and the star.  It is about 2-1/2 inches long and maybe an inch and a quarter tall, so you can imagine how tiny the cuts are.

What type of metal and how thick would you use?  Some of the cuts will be so tiny that I don't think I can sandwich them in wood.  It needs to be durable enough not to bend during wear.  I have cut brass and copper before to use on other projects, but I don't think it was thick enough for wear - too soft.  I may cut one out of a CD just to see if it will be wearable, but I still want to try a metal.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Guinivere Sanding System
« on: March 10, 2011, 09:00:04 am »
Does any one out there have this system by King Arthur Tools?  I have the inflatable sanders for bowls but I chuck them into my drill press.  I know I have seen someone with it in their shop in a photo somewhere.  It may have been Steve.  I want to know about the flex shaft and if it is really worth it.  I hate to sand and have plenty of bench sanders, palm sanders, ROS sanders and hand sanders but I am still looking for that magic jelly bean that makes it even more easy.  Good, bad or indifferent - I'd sure like to know.

Computer questions / What happened to my videos?
« on: January 27, 2011, 07:02:53 am »
The little box with the video Steve posted the other day said I may need to update my adobe flash player to view this video.  So I did.  Now I can't view any of the videos on Steves blog.  What happened and how do I fix it?  The boxes with the videos just has the red X in the corner.

The Coffee Shop / Can't wait to see it
« on: December 22, 2010, 11:20:49 am »
My husband told me my ornament came!!!  I made him open it.  He says it is quite beautiful.  A cross with fretwork around the border.  I cant wait to see it.  As many of you know, I am in New Mexico with my daughter and granddaughter.  Her husband is deployed and she had to have surgury last week so I am here until January taking care of things.

Thank you so much, Robert!  I will post a picture when I get home.

www.sheilalandrydesigns.com  If you haven't been there, I encourage you to go.  Much easier to navigate and you can blow up the pictures.  I saw stuff I hadn't seen before.  I absolutely love the new baskets.
If you haven't tried spiral blades and are looking for a good pattern to try them with, check out her free pattern.

The Coffee Shop / scrollsaw blade saves the day!
« on: October 14, 2010, 08:18:37 am »
I got a phone call early this morning from my daughter.  Her husband had just broken his key off in the ignition.  He was parked behind her so no one was going anywhere.  He is in the Air Force and was going to work this morning when it happened at 5:00 am New Mexico time.  I thought about it for a while and called him back.  Told him to cut a scrollsaw blade to where the teeth were at the very end.  Took a paper clip to move the pins out of the way and insert the scrollsaw blade alongside the key piece.  Twist the blade to get a bite and yee-haw out it came.
Bet she's glad I gave him my old scrollsaw!

General Scroll Saw Talk / Combining Oil and Paint
« on: October 09, 2010, 10:12:57 am »
I want to paint a small area of one of my spiral bowls.  If I oil it first, will the paint adhere?  If I oil it after - will it discolor the paint?
