It really does sound like the blade is upside down. I can't tell you how many times I have done the same thing. If it is really fighting you, that is probably the issue.

I've never had any luck with the bigger blades. I would back up my blade size to a #7 or even a #5 and, like everyone else has said, very slow feed.

Some of that depends on whether you stand or sit. I'm a stander so the pedal is on the floor and hit the gas as you said. On the odd occasion that I sit down, I mount it sideways on the leg of my table and use my knee.
