Brag Forum / 6 inch bamboo bowl
« on: March 19, 2015, 03:33:52 pm »
I was given 3/4 of a box of 14mm thick bamboo flooring a couple of months back and this is one of the projects from just 1/2 of one of the boards.  I glued together 2 pieces of 3 1/2 inch wide x 7 inches long flooring and then cut this bowl from it.  The bowl is 6 inches in diameter and about 2 1/4 high.  Finished with Tung Oil.

Brag Forum / This is what has kept me busy since the New Year
« on: March 12, 2015, 10:01:36 pm »
These are what have been occupying most of my free time.

Elephant Bank was a commission piece for a shower gift for a friend of my sister.  The bank is 10 ? inches from trunk to tail, 7 inches tall and 3 ? inches wide.  Painted in gray acrylic and top coated with semi gloss lacquer.

Whale Bank was a commission for a baptismal gift. The bank is 10 ? inches from trunk to tail, 7 inches tall and 3 ? inches wide.  Painted in gray acrylic and top coated with semi gloss lacquer.

Artic Fox bank was a regular order.  The bank is 12 ? inches from trunk to tail, 11 inches tall and 3 ? inches wide.  Painted in white and black water based acrylic paint and top coated with semi gloss lacquer.

Red Fox Bank  The bank is 12 ? inches from trunk to tail, 11 inches tall and 3 ? inches wide.  Painted in red-orange, white and black water based acrylic paint and top coated with semi gloss lacquer.

Snail Bank ? 6 of these 10 inches from nose to tail and 7 ? tall and 3 ? thick.  Sealed with tung oil and top coated with shellac.

Tribute banks ? 14 in total 6 pandas, 6 squirrels and 2 Whales.  The patterns were not mine, they belonged to a customer?s father who passed suddenly.  I was commissioned to complete the banks and to make the 2 whales from scratch but using his pattern.  All painting was water based acrylic and then top coated with shellac

Piggy Bank ? I have made just a few ? 34 of these since January 1 2015.  10 ? inches long x 7 ? inches tall x 3 ? inches wide.  Sealed with tung oil and top coated with shellac.

Still working on projects ... just not as much time as I would wish to be able to spend on them.

Brag Forum / Wooden Whale Bank
« on: March 04, 2015, 01:06:18 am »
I made this bank for my mother to donate to the youth group at her church.  The bank is 10 1/4 inches long x 7 1/2 inches tall x 3 1/4 thick.  I normally do not paint my banks with the exception of the Fox Bank, Elephant Bank and now the Whale Bank.  I used water based acrylic paint and then top coated it with shellac.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Large item clamping press
« on: February 28, 2015, 07:36:11 am »
I am working on a clamp / press for making bowls and banks and boxes.  I had some left over water well pipe so I made a stand.  The idea is to make a press that would be somewhat like one of those 20 ton bearing presses at Harbor Freight, but who needs 20 ton of pressure for wood hehe.  So I drilled holes in the well pipe ( point E ) and put a removable cross bar between the pipes on both sides.  I was able to get on the cheap some cut off stair tread ( point C ) that was being tossed at Home Depot.  I planed both pieces flat and marked one upper and one lower.  I purchased 2 5/8 in all thread that were 48 inches long and cut them in half.  (Point A ).  I drilled 1 inch holes in the four corners of the stair tread pieces and bolted the all thread to it.  I then sleeved the all thread with some 1 inch pvc piping.  The whole upper section is raised and lowered with an old ( 40 years ) scissor jack that I had laying around not using.  This is still very much a work in progress however it does show promise.

Brag Forum / 4 stacked spiral bowls
« on: January 14, 2015, 09:26:02 pm »
All 4 of these bowls were made from the same pattern.  The differences were the thickness of the wood and the size of the pattern.

The first bowl ( top left )
This Bowl was cut from 1/2 inch thick BB.  Sealed with Tung Oil and then top coated with satin lacquer.  The pattern was full size.

The second bowl ( top right )
This bowl was cut from this blank that is 5/8 in. thick.  The pattern was full size.  Sealed with tung oil and then top coated with satin lacquer.

The third bowl ( bottom left )
This bowl was cut from 1/4 in. 3 pile ply.  The pattern was full size.  I did not use all of the rings.  Sealed with tung oil and top coated with satin lacquer.

The fourth bowl ( bottom right )
This bowl was cut from 1/4" bb however the pattern was only 5 inches in diameter.  Sealed with tung oil and top coated with satin lacquer.

The two on the top were full size but had different wood thickness. The striped one was 5/8 in and the other 1/2 inch.
The other two were 1/4 inch but of different size ( diameter ) patterns. All the bowls were sealed with tung oil and then top coated with satin lacquer.  As you can see there can be a wide variance in making a bowl with a pattern.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Blade Storage and DW788 Dust Collection
« on: December 29, 2014, 09:26:41 pm »
This is what I use for my blade storage.  The pull out drawer sits to the left of my saw.  I had a set of drawer slides from a cabinet that reclaimed.

For the dust collection I made a simple 8 inch in diameter bowl, cut it in half.  Since I had the stand that provided a good base to mount a board with a hole in it for the suction.  I glued one of the halves of the bowl to that board.  For the suction I was able to find a defective 1 hp harbor freight dust collector.  I replaced the motor with an old motor I scavenged someplace a couple of years ago.  While it does not get every bit of dust it does for the most part keep it off the floor.  It i s not too noisy either.

This is a Sheila Landry pattern at about 3/4 size due to the wood I used.  Cut from 1/2 inch bamboo that was 3 1/4 inches wide ( the pattern calls out a 4 inch board... did not want to do a glue up :)) Finished with Tung Oil.

Brag Forum / Spalted Maple Oval Bowl
« on: December 18, 2014, 11:19:24 pm »
I had a small piece of spalted maple ( 4 x 7 x 3/4 ) left over from another project.  I decided to make a bowl from it.  The bowl is 3 3/4 inches wide x 6 1/2 long and 3 inches tall.  The wall thickness started off at 1/4 inch and is more like 3/16 inch thick now.  I sealed the bowl with tung oil and then top coated it with shellac.
