General Scroll Saw Talk / Reclaiming of Shellac
« on: April 19, 2016, 12:03:55 am »
I do not know what most of you use for a finish however I use shellac for a lot of my top coat finishes.  A few years ago I purchased some of those small plastic triangles that you put your project on when you are going to put a finish on it and do not want it laying on the table picking up stuff.  I use these standoffs when I use spray shellac, yea the spray can of it.  Anyway when putting the shellac on the projects it gets on the standoffs as well and over a few projects time builds up to a good amount.  What do you do?  Me I get my 1 pint mason jar 3/4 full of Denatured Alcohol, a piece of paper, an exacto knife ( do not want the sharp edge only the back of the blade ) and the standoffs with built up shellac overspray on them.  The store will sell you bags of shellac chips which you can then dissolve in denatured alcohol but it can be expensive.  A good while back I realized that I was capturing a decent amount of shellac on the standoffs I was using and that I could reclaim it for use in touchups and small item finishing. So what you need to do is this:
1) Put the paper down  on the workbench.  This does 2 things, 1 keep the chips from picking up anything from the bench such as sawdust or the such and 2 will allow you to add the chips to the mason jar of denatured alcohol easily.
2) Using the back edge of the exacto knife or an old hack saw blade scrape the shellac overspray off the standoff allowing the chips to land on the paper.
3) After you have cleaned all the standoffs and put them aside, open up the mason jar and add the scrapped off shellac to it.  Close the lid tight and gently shake the jar for a couple of moments.  Depending upon how much you just added and how much was in the denatured alcohol to start with it may not all dissolve immediately.  That is ok.  There probably will be a hazy layer on the bottom and that is contaminants so as long as you are no dipping your brush in that region your shellac will be ok.

One other source of shellac needs to be mentioned and that assumes that you are using those spray cans of it.  When you "empty" one of the spray cans there is still at least a couple of tablespoons of shellac still in the can, you just can not spray it out.  You need a small funnel an ice pick and your mason jar of shellac for this part.  After getting the empty can remove the spray tip and set it aside, you never know when you might need one.  Puncture the top of the empty can making sure that the hole is away from you as there will still be some propellant in the can.  Once the pressure is gone make several more holes in the top of the can.  Put the funnel on the mason jar and turn the can over the funnel, any shellac left in the can will now come out and into your mason jar adding to your reclaimed shellac.  You pay for it why throw it away?

Brag Forum / Fox Bank ( Unpainted )
« on: February 24, 2016, 06:25:53 am »
I had a customer that wanted a plain wooden fox with no paint.

I think it is interesting.  The bank is 12 in high and 14 in long and 3 3/4 inches wide.  I used BB ply for the outside layers as they had the front legs which have broken in transit when using just plain wood so I switched to the BB for strength.  Sealed with Tung Oil and then Shellacked.

Brag Forum / Easter Bunny Family
« on: January 10, 2016, 12:20:09 pm »
I had a customer over Christmas want 6 Bunny Banks - One about 1 1/2 times bigger than the normal ones and 5 normal sized.  She also wanted them painted different colors.  I was able to match her color selection by working with the paint lady at Lowes.  The banks are for her daughter to collect coins, bills and foreign coins.

General Scroll Saw Talk / General Opportunity For Us Scrollers
« on: November 08, 2015, 11:59:21 pm »
I had a 2 day show, sorry no pictures as my little camera was broken and i was not going to bring my expensive one out for this.  It was a decent show, this show was hosted by my church. Not the best I have done but not the worst by far and I made some interesting networking connections which as the potential to make up for the mediocre sales.   I was approached by 2 people that had interesting ideas that if properly approached could make someone or a bunch of someones :) a bit of money.  What their idea consisted was this:

My pastor approached me about making Family Name Signs ( Intersecting Word Art ) for the folks getting married at the church.  They offered $25 per for me to make them for this purpose.  What a neat gift from the church.

The second was a real estate broker and he had a similar idea - Family Name Sign for the new owner of the house that was just purchased - also at $25 per sign.  Good public relations between the realtor and the customer.

Just though I would share this with y'all as I seem to me to be something that everyone should be able to take advantage of as there are a lot of churches and realtors out there.

Brag Forum / 2 Bowls and a Mug
« on: October 31, 2015, 12:41:53 am »
This first bowl is a dual bowl and was inspired by BrianA from another board.  The woods used are Holly and Sapele.  It was finished with tung oil.

This second bowl is also a dual bowl however I changed the smaller bowl so that I could put a "dip" bowl in.  The bowls were cut from 3/4 ( 19mm) BB then stained a walnut and finished with shellac.

As I get thirsty at the craft shows I make a mug or two and use it at the shows.  This mug was cut from pine and finished with tung oil.

Brag Forum / Family Sign and a Mahogany and Lauan Ply bowl
« on: September 25, 2015, 03:03:33 pm »
The backer for the sign is 3/4 pine.  The sign itself is 1/4 Cherry.  This is not for anyone specific, I cut it to be a display model for my shows.  It will allow me to show what it might look like and to give them some idea of any changes that they would like to make when ordering.

This bowl was cut from my scrap pile.  I had a section of 1/4 inch mahogany and a section of 1/2 lauan plywood.  After gluing the mahogany to the top and bottom of the lauan plywood I cut this bow.  It is 4 1/4 in diameter.  Sealed with tung oil and shellaced.

Get togethers, shows and swap meets / Art in the Park Art and Craft Show
« on: August 15, 2015, 08:19:01 pm »
I had a show today. Here are pictures of my setup

While I did not sell everything I did sell about 70% of what I brought.  It was a very nice day for holding a show, 78 degrees partly sunny.  All in all it was not my best showing at this event nor was it my worst.  Had a great time.
