Wizard
« on: May 19, 2011, 09:19:23 pm »
One of my highschool students has an interest in doing a fretwork type project once his main woods project is done. He said he wanted to do some type of wizard design. I found one in my stash of patterns, but I think it is a little more complex then this student will want to tackle. Do any of you know where I might find an easy wizard pattern?
Thanks from me and my student.

Do a Google search for 'free wizard clip art'. There are lots of clip art sites out there and the clip art varies from the simple to the very complex. I went through this process several years ago when I was searching for a wizard for my own uses. Once you find a suitable one it should be really easy to create the bridges required for scroll work.

As an aside, in one of my other 'personas' in a forum far, far away I am known as 'The Wizard', a name bestowed on me by a former World Champion Kite Flyer after I invented a hand-held electronic device used for starting competitive kite flying events. The name stuck and after that everyone started calling me 'The Wizard'. This led to my search for a suitable image to place on my fighter kite box and I eventually found this one which I reworked (mostly the hands/arms) to include the kite.

For a long time this image was stuck to an old pizza box as that was what I was using to store my fighter kites in at the time but a very good friend of mine had other ideas! I was asked to teach a fighter kite building class for our local kite club and as a thank-you for teaching the class and as a birthday present to me my friend secretly made arrangements with another club member to build me a custom made wooden kite box. After it was built my friend, who happens to be a woodburner, got my original image from my wife and burned the image onto the lid. I was totally out of the loop on this and had no idea until a big fuss was made of the presentation at the end of the class! Needless to say I was totally gobsmacked!

This is the front of the box....

...and this is the inside with room to store several reels, a first aid kit (sliced fingers are part of fighter kite flying!) and literally dozens of fighter kites.

Needless to say I am now hooked on wizards and have quite a collection of wizard based artwork, the full set of Harry Potter books (read many, many times) and a full set of HP DVDs (also watched many, many times).

NOTE: Right-click on the images above and select 'view image' to see them full size.

EDIT: Whoops! GB beat me to it while I was uploading pics and writing my spiel.....lol.  ;D

This site has a lot of good patterns free.

Here is an easy Wizard Pattern from there.

I had told my student to look for some clip art that we could work from. He has seen some of the patterns that I have used so he knew sort of what to look for. I'll find out tomorrow if he did his homework.
thanks for the reminder about the pumpkin site, I always forget it. I have cut a few of their patterns.
thanks guys!

Mrsn That 3rd one on Gary's list is quite easy to do, I have done that one, probably the 3rd pattern that I cut when I first started.
