My son's first intarsia
« on: February 09, 2013, 06:31:13 am »
Well my boy started his first intarsia piece last night.
It's a project he is making to give to his girl friend for Valentines day.

With his limited (albeit good) experience with the scroll saw, I had him attach the pattern to a piece of Aspen, and cut the entire piece out.  Rather than using different types of woods for each piece.  Once he had it all cut out, I showed him how I always shape intarsia pieces, with a rotory tool and a drum sander.  He went right to work.

The pattern he used was a Kathy Wise patter.  WHat is funny is he said he wanted to do a rose, I told him to find a pic of a rose online and I would try to draw a pattern from it, what he brought me was a print out of a KW rose intarsia pattern.

ANyhow, it isn't done yet, but it is cut, and most of the shaping has been done.

to finish it we plan on cutting a heart shape out of 1/4 inch oak plywood, then attach the rose to the from, and  He wants to attach magnets to the back so she can hang it in her locker.

we will post pics once it is finished.

For those of you who have never been in this situation (sharing a hobby with a child) you have no idea what this feels like, for me to spend time with my 12 year old son, working with wood, and both of us thoroughly loving what we are doing, it's indescribable.  At one point last evening, he stopped working, turned around to look at me and said, "Its awesome to be out here working on this wood stuff with you" then turned around and went right back to work.

Yeah, Im quite the proud pappa right now

I think julief got it right - MAGNIFICENT, you should be proud of him, and he should be really proud of his work.

hehehehe, we just made a trip to Menards to pick up a couple of things, he had no idea that one of the things we were going to pick up was a second scroll saw.

as I type he is sawing away..  I love it!!!
