The Patterns That Grampa Makes

I have noticed that grampa makes awesome patterns from photos i am new to scrolling have done several easy projects but i would love to learn this, i have gimp downloaded, is that were i need to start? what is the easy way to do this? ???

go to http://www.scrollsawvillage.com go to the university section they have good video tutorials for portrait pattern making with gimp and inkscape.
