Buying a new saw
« on: September 04, 2011, 11:02:12 am »
Hi Steve,

I'm going to buy a new scroll saw in the very near future.  What kind do you recomend?  I'm thinking about going into full time woodworking again and would be using this new saw a lot.  I have almost all the woodworking saws and equipment I'll need, but I need a good new saw.  The saw I have is about 40 yrs old.  I've had it at least 25 yrs and it was well used when I got it.  There's no blade tensioning on it.  It's got a spring retrieve head.
Thanks,
  Dave

Hey Dave, I think newfie is right! The EX21 is probably the saw I will get when I replace my current saw!

Thanks guys, but I can't afford the EX21.  I can get the DeWalt DW788 tho.  That's the one I've been looking at anyway.  I've read quite a few reviews on the DW788, it looks to be almost as good as the EX21.

that's true - the DW788 is often used and should perform well. Consider some additional stuff - light, foot switch, a proper stand.

There is a "change profile" button underneath the page - make sure you hit that one.

If you are patient, you can usually find a great deal on a used saw on Craigslist.  I have seen dewalts, rbi's, hegners, and excaliburs all listed over time.  Another suggestion is to go to claz.org a create a search.  It will search all the free classifieds within whatever range of distance you tell it, and email you whenever an ad with your search criteria is posted.
