blade for cutting 1/2 wood
« on: February 05, 2011, 10:12:11 am »
I use the flying dutchman blades but find lack of experience in figuring out size blades to use.

I use his puzzle blades and his "cut thick wood" blades and then I just hit and miss on the others that came in my sample pack.

I want to try to make Steve's newest basket--http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_mmS1YgSbc_s/TUuMjjaBzKI/AAAAAAAAEoU/NtntElD1ZSE/s1600/basket44.jpg

but I figure the puzzle blade will be too flexible and lead to to many un-round edges and the heavy blade won't make the round over cut good.

so what does one use?

TIA

Hi John, my 1st choice would be a #5-SR blade or possibly a #7 depending on the wood type. make some practice cuts in the wood you plan to use to see which blade works best for you :)

For hardwoods I would use a FD UR3 or an Olsen 2R or 5R.

I agree with Dan for 1/2" stock  I'd go to the #3 FD UR.

On 1/2" and that pattern, I would use either a #3 or #5 reverse tooth blade.

yeah, #5 is good and straight, a #3 would be go for the sharp corners - for the basket not needed. So stick to #5 and set more tension to it as to the small puzzle blades.

Be sure your tension is tight enough or your blade will wander.
