Pattern Requests. / Hereford Bull pattern
« on: April 24, 2018, 02:41:12 am »
Howdy folks. been awhile since I've been here. I've been recoupin' from a couple heart attacks & a lung embolism I had in December. So, now, I'm beginnin' to get back on my feet, & tryin' to get back in the shop.

I've been commissioned to create a plaque for a ranch here that is celebratin' their 100th year in the cattle business. They raised hereford cattle. I'm lookin' for a pattern of a hereford bull. Not a puzzle pattern, a pattern to put in the the center of the plaque to cut. I've looked online, but so far I've found is puzzles. I'm still lookin', but any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

You learned a hard lesson with a piece you put a lot of time & effort into. Trust me, you're not alone. I made a memorial for a family, & it being a custom job, it was 1/2" cherry, with designs & things that involved the person the memorial was for. Lots of fret work. I had it finished, no breakage, clean cuts, had it on the table ready to shoot clear coat & my shirt tail caught one corner of it. Before I could catch it, it hit the floor & I had a jigsaw puzzle.:(

i bet you'll do a little more research on saws before you "jump" into the next one. It takes $$$$ to cross the border, & their prices are different that ours. This is a a lesson of dollars & SENSE.

yep! always release the tension off the blade when you're not usin' the saw.

I agree with wedo? A no. 9 is a perty stout blade to be makin' curves & turns with. On the other hand, like toneman & Mr. Wilson said, learn to look ahead of you where you're going to cut, & don't concentrate on the blade.

Most folks, if you read their posts close enough, have generally the same issue. They have trouble cuttin' a straight line, or turnin' corners or curves or designs of some sort, even lettering. The scroll saw weren't designed to cut in a straight line. It's purpose is to cut designs & shapes & odd curves you aren't able to cut on any other machine.

Which brings me to my next point. The sharper & finer the turns & shapes, the smaller the blade you should be using. Don't get frustrated with the situation, brother. Just keep practicin'. Just because you're cuttin' thick material doesn't mean you can't drop down in blade size & speed. The smaller the blade, the slower it will cut, but, you'll be able to make sharper turns & cleaner designs. All of my projects are done in 1/2" hardwoods. I use anywhere from a #7 down to a #2/0 blade. It just depends on the detail, the curves & situations involved in the project. A little piece of advice. No project of any accordance will not use just one size blade. Sometimes it'll use 4 -5 different size blades.

Hang in there! Like they said, make ya different shapes & curves & try different size blades to see what works best for you. Make sure to keep your tension right, or your blade will turn when you turn your project. ;)God Bless & keep scrollin'!

check the bearings at the pitman arm. if you've got any movement at all, replace them. If you don't, it will progress to bigger issues.

Like Scrappile said, the first give away to a dull blade is having to push a little harder to cut. Don't let that fool ya with tension. If your tension is to loose to begin with, your blade will wander like a drunk in the street! ;D In turn, dulling your blade almost immediately. Depending on what wood you're cutting, the thickness of it, & the speed of the blade all play into how long your blade will actually last. Speed creates heat, so the faster you cut, the heat will take the temper out of the blade causing it to dull & burn the wood. You'll be able to smell a light burning wood scent if you're paying attention.

Wood species will dull a blade pretty fast, too. The Harder the wood, the faster the blade will dull. Cherry, oak, walnut, maple, just to name a few, will not eat a blade as fast as ash, teak, cypress, etc. Cherry & oak wood WILL burn if your blade speed is to fast, in turn, dulling your blade.

The thickness of the wood you're cutting will dull blades, too. Make sure you're using the right size blade for the thickness of material you're cutting. The thicker the material, the less teeth/inch you want, & a little less tension. The thinner the material you're cutting, the MORE teeth/inch you want on the blade, & a little MORE tension. Every blade makes its own sound when cutting. As a rule, if your blade starts to make a squeal sound, it's done. Don't force it to cut, you'll just bust the blade.

And as Scrap pile also mentioned, try several breeds of blades in your projects til you find what works for you. Personally, I keep 30 different types & sizes of blades of Flying Dutchman & Olson. With more experience, you'll soon figure out every project, unless it's a small one, usually uses more than one size & type of blade. Keep practicin', & keep askin' questions. We were all beginners at one time ;) Enjoy the day!

good morning friends! I have a niece that dearly love the octopus, & she's wantin' one made for her for Christmas. So far, all I've been able to find is intarsia patterns. I'm not into intarsia, I'm looking for scroll patterns of the octopus. If you can help me out, I'd greatly appreciate it! Thank you for your time, Brad.

you're right about that, Miss Judy! First it was my back surgery, then mom, then it just started in one thing after another. There have been days I feel like ol' Charlie Brown & the dark clouds follow me every place I go. :-\ This is one of the few times I've been in the chat section. It's good to hear from you, Miss Judy.

I just keep takin' one day at a time, one step at a time. Money is tight, life is edgy, but hopefully things will start lookin' up soon. Thank you for the kick back.

I finished an anniversary project a month ago that went to Ohio, shortly after that, I started another project & the bottom bearing on the pitman arm went out. So, I was hung waitin' on parts. In the meantime, my allergies kicked in, BIG TIME! I managed to get an ear & sinus infection. Been fightin' that for goin' on a month. My Sawbones gave me antibiotics, & grounded me from the shop til the dizzy spells quit :-[ hopefully today or tomorrow I can get back to the shop. I've got parts for the Hawk, so I can get it back together & finish that project. And get started on a quilt ladder for a customer.
