General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Best Wood for Thin Walls
« on: June 22, 2018, 06:30:54 pm »
Here is the rub of your delima.  If the wood is too soft it has no strength but is easy to cut, if it is real dense it has a lot of strength but is hard(er) to cut.  A close grain of wood works as well as a wood with not too straight of a grain.  While pine will work for most things, maple ( much denser ) can be cut quite thinly.  You will have to experiment a bit to see what wood works best for you and your style of cutting.

The hinge bolt that you are working with is the pivot for the arm.  By tightening the bolt you increase the friction holding the arm in place.  Several blog entries of other sites have mentioned this in the past.  Since the only real time that the arm is moved in this way is when you are replacing the blade this is not a serious problem and in fact has been used in the past as a way to hold the arm up while threading the blade through the project.  Personally I have a short piece of wood attached to a large circular magnet gotten from a magnetron from a busted microwave

I put a piece of felt on the bottom to help remove the possiblity of scratching the arm.

I replaced my default Dewalt light sometime ago with LED lighting.  I have currently an abundance of light in and around my saw.  It is very will lit.  ALL of the lighting is LED, much brighter, and safer.  I think that they all should come with LED lighting.

Dennis that sounds a bit like the beginnings of carpal tunnel syndrome.  You should have that looked at just to be sure.

Brag Forum / Simple Pine and Mahogany box
« on: May 10, 2018, 06:12:17 pm »
Made with 1/4 mahogany and 3/4 pine.  This box was completely cut using the scroll saw.  It was sealed with Tung Oil and top coated with shellac.  The inside of the drawer was flocked.

The main thing Skip is that what ever the movement is that it is consistent.  If it is minor then as long as you are not stack cutting much over 1 inch or so there should be no issue.  Assuming of course that you have the side to side taken care of and that the blade is plumb to the table.

Skip this is a common thing on scroll saws.  There is a very very good site that has a good section on tuning up the 788.  Here is the link to it.  http://www.scrollsaws.com/SawReviews/DewltTuneUp.htm.  There are a bunch of very knowledgeable folks here so do not be afraid to ask questions :)

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Wood Selection for Scrollsaw Patterns
« on: May 09, 2018, 01:31:29 pm »
That is one of the benefits of a pattern.  While it gives you something to cut to the type and thickness of the wood is basically your choice.  I can give you an example.  There is a particular stacking type bowl pattern that depending on how thick the wood it can look anything from a pie plate to a lamp shade, same patten just different thickness of wood being used.  A lot of the portrait type patterns tend to be cut using the 1/4 inch or 3 mm thick stock.  Bowls, Boxes, figures etc all can use much thicker stock.  Looking forward to seeing your work.

Paduk is like Shelia has mentioned very hard and the sawdust is toxic.  It also especially if very fine can get everywhere so please use filters when possible.
