General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Scrolling with my GRANDCHILDREN
« on: February 22, 2018, 08:43:10 pm »
I would start the habit of the basic safety issues, eye protection, dust mask or dust collection, and ear protection for louder tools, even some sanders can cause hearing damage not so much the loudness they put off its the amount of time your ears are effected to that noise. This is something when I was younger I should have listened to my parents about having my music WAY to loud or being around loud noises when working, I now have permenant hearing loss, I have a constant ringing in my ears, can not here higher pitch tones.

Eye protection is a must, I have had small particles get in my eyes and its no fun and hurts extremely bad no other pain the world then have a eye doctor pull something out of you eyeball from not haveing saftey glasses on or having something liek carb cleaner get in your eye. Hands show them how to keep them safe, out of harms way. I woudl go over safe working practices all the time, get them in habit of putting on safety glasses without thinking about it.

Their ears also may be more sensitive to sound, though there are some neat hearing protection, hunters use these they amplify sound even the smallest sound you can hear, but a loud pop like a gun going off it instantly muffles it. These are nifty to wear, you can still hear but if a sound isover the preset limit in the unit it muffles it.

Check your local facebook sales sites or craiglist for used tools like tablesaws and such instead of buying new, even pawn shops have good deals rather than buying new ones. Most all my tools I have bought used, my table saw is a older craftsman 10 inch I bought for 50 bucks, drill press was new but a small cheap HF version does good for drilling holes in the wood, I did trade work and got a big belt/disc sander combo unit cost me 20 bucks.

Even a cheap circular saw would be a start to cut wood down to size. or even a small portable table saw would work.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Re: Patterns peel off
« on: February 20, 2018, 12:42:37 pm »
I had this issue alot most times the painters tape lifts off, others not letting the spray glue get tackey enough, using that respositonable spray glue don't hold good on painters tape.

I found something else that worked better though can be a bear to get off but would not lift off at all. Its full sheet shipping labels. I print on them stick right on the wood cover with packing tape, never had a issue of it peeling. It does take a hair dryer to soften the label to peel it off but also left very little adhesive on the wood to clean off. I first tried a small pack of it from walmart then ordered a bigger 100 count from amazon for 20 bucks.

Steve good found some stuff kinda like these labels a peel and stick stuff that stays on the wood but peels off easy he did a video on his channel about it.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Foot pedal
« on: February 16, 2018, 11:31:36 pm »
I have the on/off HF one and have been known to relax my foot and unkownly stepdown and turn my saw off or on, kinda wakes you. Not sure I could stand to keep my foot on the pedal to keep it on while its running though am sure its safer that way for some tools to have a deadman switch.

If it messes up under 30 days you can take it back no questions asked just tell them it mess up you want to enchage it. Don't tell them you use a foot pedal just say it messed up.

Foot pedal is just that a switch but you use your foot. HF has two different models, one step its on, step again its off. The other known as a deadman switch have to keep your foot pressure on it let off it turns off.

Using the foot pedal turn your saw switch on and leave it on, plug saw into foot pedal plug foot pedal in the wall, shoudl be good to go.

By couriosity did you buy the porter cable saw at Lowe's?

I got into messing with pallet wood, I work at Lowes now and they took me out to whats called the bull pen and the huge stacks of pallets I started drooling all over my self and some of these pallets looked to be 8 feet or longer. My heart just sank I couldn't get any of them either, some were really nice and clean too.

Ask Steve a question. / Re: scrollsaw issue questin
« on: February 07, 2018, 10:23:26 pm »
Get some weights to put on the stand to make it heavier, sand bags or even some old lift weights from a weight machine. Doing this making the stand heavier keeps the saw movement from picking up the saw and bouncing so to say it where the vibrations and shaking are coming from. Being on a wooden floor like a shed more or less amplifies this movement, so making the stand heavier also helps.

Not a bad idea for consumables like this used on projects to hit the dollar stores to get it on the cheap since its going to be cut and wasted anyway.

Where do you have it mounted? These saws need a good hard solid stand or benchtop to help reduce vibration and shaking when the saw is running. I had my first saw a crapsman on my bench and it would shake and vibrate, I then built a stand out of 2x4's and a 3/4 inch thick plywood top and bolted the saw down, the vibration and shaking was greatly reduced, even for a cheap low end scrollsaw.

One of two things, its either to check that your square is square if it is the led lights up. Or tells you the blade in the scroll saw is 90 to the table if its the led lights up, would my guesses.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Dull Blade Question
« on: December 30, 2017, 10:25:26 am »
I never saved mine, I had a old cat litter bucket under my saw used it to toss cut outs and scrap into and tossed dull blades in it, when it was full I took it straight outside to the big trash can and dumped it out. I never put mine in a trash bag in the inside trash can.

I can concur there is no other pain than trying to pick up and find a gross of blades that somehow got scattered on the floor, more so on a dark wooden floor, a magnet does help but still a pain.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Best Blade for Cutting Balsa and Thin Ply
« on: December 22, 2017, 09:52:37 pm »
There is a blade called reverse scroll or just  reverse blade it has teeth on the bottom that will cut on the up stroke this helps reduce tear out and works pretty good, flying dutchman has them, I think other brands have them as well but flying dutchman is what I use.

I am here just floating around. Its a rough time for me, I laid my grandmother to rest yesterday and being close to christmas makes it even harder. I am not really big on christmas or this time of year and this makes it harder, but I check in and read the forum everyday.
