The Coffee Shop / So busy haven't even able to look at my saw
« on: October 20, 2013, 10:17:33 pm »
Well I changed jobs, got my dump truck driving gig and ever since have had zero time for nothing, have been running 5 days a week about 10-11 hour days, last pay period I pulled 112 hours for the 2 weeks! I have not been able to even look at my poor saw, it whimpers ever time I walk by. I need and want to get back out there but I am so beat on the weekends, plus trying to play catch up with stuff around the house I don't have time.

I did get me one of those propane heaters that mount on top of the propane bottles and out it on a 30 gallon one so I got some heat this winter when I do get a chance to get out to make some dust, have already gave it a spin and it does spit off some good heat, its a dual burner but may only need one.

Hopefully I will catch up to all the post I have missed one of these days, and hope to you guys and gals around, but work is more important than play.

The Coffee Shop / Quit my job of 14 yrs started a new one
« on: September 11, 2013, 08:52:04 pm »
Well I got tired of all the political good ole boy junk and quit after 14 years, went to driving a dump truck for local wife husband company, yes wife owns the company. Its been pretty fun, more relaxed and laid back, though this is new to me shifting one of these trucks, I do know how to run one just not shift them. Been going about 3 days now and have gotten good at it and getting better though my knee and thigh scream at me at the end of the day, wish these big ole truck had easy clutches to push down. Today was better not so sore just tired.

I did get stuck today, wasn't bad but a stupid moment one of those I knew better. Was right in the middle of our tornado damaged area from back in May it was something else, was right behind where one of the elementary schools got destroyed. I have been all over the place, even in our town on a major bridge work, that was not fun, getting stuck everytime I unloaded having to holler for the dozer.

But overall so far I am loving I am more at ease, not stressed out and thinking crap I got to go to work today, these guys are not in a hurry and love that you do a good job and award according to whether say good job, or give a raise, which I hope as good as I am doing my raise will come soon. Pulling about 11 hour days sometimes more could be a 13 or 14 hour day, here comes the green more for woodworking.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Table top keeps rusting in spots
« on: September 01, 2013, 01:10:35 pm »
No matter what I do it keeps getting surface rust on two spots, its to the right and left of the blade at the edge of the table. I can sand it down real smooth get it off, use the paste wax have a good slick surface come back a few days later and the rust is back in the same spot, not anywhere else on the top but these two spots, the left side edge is the worse of it. I can take pictures to show.

When first bought the saw the machine marks were pretty rough, took some 60 sandpaper and sanded it some of them out, wondering if I need to take the top into a machine shop and get them to machine 100% smooth if that would help, any idea's, I live in central Oklahoma if that has anything to do with it, been a kinda humid summer this year, had lots of rain in the spring.

Pattern Requests. / My second pattern
« on: August 25, 2013, 04:32:56 pm »
This is for a trucking company I know somebody that drives there and myself will be there before long, local dump hauling company. There is something about it its not quite right, in the middle I wanted there names but couldn't work that out in Gimp, may just cut letters out and attach them in the middle. If anybody sees anything that needs fixing on this and can help it would be great, I don't have good steady hands for curves or straight lines but for taking off there website site and working it out it turned out good.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Craftsman or olsan blades
« on: August 10, 2013, 12:51:08 pm »
I was looking at the sears site at there scroll blades, don't know what the store will have in stock, but they have reverse and others, a dozen are about the same as lowes, but a better selection. Does anybody have any idea how good these are? I think they also carry olsen are these good too? For me its about the only way I can get blades is in the big stores as most times all I have is cash on me and can't order online. I want to go look at sears to see what blades they have and the thickness of them, I use the ones at lowes bosch blades and they are hit and miss, can get a good set, but then turn around and get a set that won't last but a few cuts. I know the FD blades are good but don't have a option to order them unless I send cash first to mike to place the order then have to wait for it to be proccessed and sent back.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Want to learn how to make a pattern
« on: August 06, 2013, 09:01:44 pm »
I have a picture I want to turn into a patten which I think is funny but don't know if its copyrighted or not, its the gieco camel that ask what day is it. I think its the funniest thing and want to cut it out, but have no clue how to make a pattern out a picture using gimp or inkscape. Is it pretty easy or is there alot of hours to sit at the pc to mess with it? If it takes along time on the pc I am already done I don't like to sit at the pc for long periods, I get bored easy on it.

Also how do I know a pic or image is copyrighted?

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / A different way to sand small parts.
« on: July 15, 2013, 10:04:13 pm »
I was sanding my small parts or blanks with a sanding block, but then mounted it in my vise made it better but still tough have to do the twist and shout with my arms. So I tried something today, I took my small palm sander turned upside down and put it in my vise plugged it and turn it on, it was much better, took just 2 seconds to sand a blank, even better after done cutting and pulled the pattern off to sand down the fibers the tape pulled up, and was faster. Will have to do this more now.

The Coffee Shop / Had a great online friend pass away this weekend
« on: May 06, 2013, 08:40:44 pm »
I found out over the weekend that a good online friend was found dead in her home, I have been heart broke. I never got to met her she lived in Canada, or get to see her just chatted online, she helped me though alot of personal issues, was fun to play games with and had a good wit about her. She will be deeply missed. I had to make some sawdust to help put my mind at ease still hurting though.

The Coffee Shop / Been busy, no sawdust
« on: April 19, 2013, 12:26:49 am »
Well I have been busy with lots of other stuff, haven't been able to make a dust, cleaned up my back yard, got alot of old junk to set out for big trash pick up, but most of my time has been doing my side work repairing lawn mowers, I am so busy not enough time at night to work on them, just got done re ringing a motor, got a blower fixed, got two weedeaters to fix, 4 push mowers to work on, another rider motor to hone and ring, a snapper rider for belt repair, snapper walk behind to repair. But its 25 a machine each time I fix them so its good money, more money to buy wood and blades so when I do get to make dust will have the stuff to do it.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Using vise to hold sanding block
« on: April 07, 2013, 11:16:16 pm »
I found today that its easy to  pinch my sanding  block in my vise to sand small parts.   I made my own block from a old 2x4 then put paper on it then put on vise . Made it a lot easier then hold a 3x4 blank to sand after cutting or doing a last sanding on it.

Brag Forum / Made a miter sled
« on: April 03, 2013, 10:31:07 pm »
Well having the new to me table able to get better cuts, saw the vid to make a miter sled so this is my attempt at it, yea its ugly, had some old 3/4 ply I had painted for something else that didn't happen so used it, already had enough screws, but it does its job will do miter for perfect 90 degree corners, will be good for small projects like boxes where I want a mitered corner. I also got a dust collection bag on the saw but need to do a video of my work area and post it here. Oh I do have a cover at the back that covers the blade, this was more or less the finished part.

The Coffee Shop / Got me a new to me table saw!
« on: March 22, 2013, 11:19:36 pm »
I Have been searching for a cheap table saw one that is better then the setup I have which is a circular saw upside down on a folding saw, yes they sold this years ago. It was small got the job done but wanted something bigger. Well after searching I found out that the cheap one like HF are finicky and for newbies on table saw can be frustrating, its best to get the name brands, even though some new name brands don't have the standard miter lost of 3/4 inch.

So couple days ago I found one on craigslist, its a 10 inch craftsman, has a stand. This is a older model and is very heavy, cast top, even has the motor hanging off the back and has the standard miter slot, turned it on it worked told the guy I will take it. Cost 55 buck! I am thrilled, issue it was in a basement aaagggghhh, had to lug it up the stairs. But got it home.

Been out there most the evening tweaking it, first order was to get out the air an dblow all the dust out of it, lubed the gears, had to align the pulleys for the belt, adjusted the belt, wire wheeled the all the dust and surface rust off the top. Spent a good 3 hours tuning it up, cleaning it up. Still got couple things I want to do put wheels on it so I can move it the heavy thing, and make a zero clearance throat plate.

Will get some pics or try to do a video of my area, if I can figure out how to show everything I have. I am still thrilled I may not sleep tonight, now just need a small bench top drill press to drill my holes, using a hand drill hurts the arms after about 30 holes.
