General Scroll Saw Talk / Delta 28-203 bandsaw 350 bucks
« on: February 07, 2014, 01:25:55 am »
http://oklahomacity.craigslist.org/tls/4306811621.html

Been watching this one he has been on there for a couple weeks, did a google search and reviews were kinda split, most swore by it said for its time its the best for a decent saw, most hated it, too much vibration, parts were cheap, they did say there is a carter bearing kits to put on it, will help alot, plus it does take a 6 inch riser block and think they said jet riser will fit. I wonder what I could get him down too, if its worth it, or sit it out see if he drops the price some more. I am not in a hurry to get one but this one caught my eye.

I watched a video on the grizzly BS and liked there g0555 model he turned it on and it was smooth and quiet, but at a hefty price tag then add in freight shipping. I have a BS on my next on my tool list to buy but trying to hold out to by one used if I can find a good deal. Lowes has the porter cable but it had more bad reviews than good.

Pattern Requests. / Gray shading on Steve's patterns
« on: February 03, 2014, 01:55:22 pm »
How do you get that gray shading on his patterns is it the color change, when I make mine I use black, but of course it makes hard to follow the line with a black blade and uses alot of ink to print.

Pattern Requests. / First pattern with text
« on: February 02, 2014, 05:11:15 pm »
Doing a search for hearts for a neighbor I come across a teddy bear holding a heart and thought since it basic will give it try this is what I come up with, had to clean up the inside of bear using the lasso tool, then added the text, this was a coloring page, the inside of the bear and spots of black all around. What do you guys think?

Now on to see if I can change the text to stretch and curve been watching youtube to see how its done text to path so will see if I can get it down, as I need to add curved text to a pattern I had made.

Pattern Requests. / Trying to mkae my own again
« on: January 29, 2014, 04:54:12 pm »
I got a image I am trying to turn into a pattern for  friend as a surprise she lost her baby think before it was born, I have made one pattern already for her and she loved it and am trying to make another this one is a good one, so far I have got the letters done they look ok, the feet are good but am not happy with how the feathers are looking or the size of the whole pattern, I printed it off and its small and offset on the paper it does not fill the whole page up, if make fit to paper its too big. I am using gimp and trying my best I want to get better with gimp to make my own, I have the original image to go by I am making the patter from. Can I get some tips on what to do and what my mistakes are. I would love to do this myself.

General Scroll Saw Talk / A couple questions about the EX saw
« on: January 10, 2014, 10:16:17 pm »
So far I have been loving this saw best money I spent, but haveing to retrain myself to a new saw is the fun part, I still catch myself reaching back to release the tension knob lol.

One thing I am kinda worried about is a tapping or rattleing if you say on the saw at certain times? Is this normal or is there something loose, do others have this issue or do I need to look at something? I check the bolts and nuts around the clamps make sure they weren't loose or coming loose, looked it over, have the arm adjusted right per the book. After spending alot of dough on this saw I don't want to mess it up. So far its doing great.

Another thing I noticed is on the back side of my project I get this gray coloring where the table color is rubbing off, hope this is something that will stop, I did put some paste wax on it, as just the bare table was still hard to control the work. And can see some small scratch marks from the wood, its good clean bb from craft store, I guess this won't hurt it other than looks.

I do like the dust collection on it, wished it had a adapter that fit the shop hose vac, went to lowes bought a pvc fitting that fits inside the black tube taped that on then the hose fit, but when the vac is on sounds like a jet engine in there with the air whistleing in the holes, bad thing is at a point the vac has some much suction it hold the work to the table, kinda nice though it won't move and won't let it jump up, and does keep the dust off the work when the air pulls through the kerf.

Overall I am loving this saw, I should have bought it long time ago, just need some warm weather to move in so I can use it more.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Home made scroll saw gloves
« on: January 06, 2014, 07:50:37 pm »
Well I had a heck of a idea and it works or at least helps. I got my new saw in and one thing I noticed is the table was very cold and cutting small things the side of my hand or hte heel of my hand would rest on the cold table, I needed gloves but as we know thats hard to change blades. So I had a pair of old used brown jersey gloves, you can get them cheap at dollar store, I cut the finger tips off, at about the first knuckle. This allowed my fingers to be able to grab small bits and change blades as well as move the blade to other holes, but also keeps the rest of hand warm off the cold table top. My old saw I had a wood over lay to keep from fighting rust. But on the new EX I don't need that and the top does get very cold.

Just thought I would pass this along to those cutting in cold conditions like me still have a heater in the garage or shop but its not enough to make the table warm, so I come up with this idea, and the best part is the gloves are cheap can get like a 2-4 pack for like a couple bucks works out to like a dollar a pair so if they wear out or tear well go get another pair.

The Coffee Shop / WOOHOO my saw just got dropped off
« on: January 06, 2014, 03:07:34 pm »
Its really nice well built machine now to go get some more propane for my heater and get it setup on my stand and give it a run see how it feels, already plugged it in and turned it on after checking it out and love it, nice and peaceful compared to my craftsman. I can't wait to get cutting it.

Pattern Requests. / Searched for pattern on google found one but lost it
« on: January 05, 2014, 11:16:27 pm »
I was bored today still waiting for my new saw so though hey why not get some patterns set up, did a google for free patterns there are lots out there. I have a couple good sites, I found a big rig was neat one, think it was called heavy hauler should have saved it, now I can't find it or remember the site it was on. I would like to have one of a big rig or even a better a dump truck to make for my boss. Is there one out there thats not to complicated thats not going to take me a year to cut out. I found one on my search a big rig but has lots of detail I may try it. But this other rig if not mistaken was not out of ply it was more like a toy and had a flat bed trailer with something on the trailer.

The Coffee Shop / I hate waiting
« on: January 01, 2014, 10:03:07 pm »
Put my order in for my EX on the 30th, I got a email saying ups has a label created, just waiting for them to pick it up and put on a truck. I am excited and waiting makes it worse knowing what I have coming to me. I want it to hurry but now its cold, have a big front moving into our state so guess will have to wait as I think I need more propane in my tank for heater in the garage before I can work. Still haven't convinced the wife to let me put the saw inside.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Thinking my saw is taking a dirt nap
« on: December 28, 2013, 11:14:18 pm »
Well after bragging how good my craftsman has been to be, its turned bad. I had it set perfect, had the front to back blade movement reduced some adn loved it, made cutting on it easier, but tonight out of no where I had side to side shake of the blade so bad I can't control my turns or make a turn. I don't know what the deal is, thinking the lower arm is worn out, I can wiggle it about 1/16th of a inch, will be tearing it down and hope there is brass bushing I and press out and replace and be good to go, if not guess will be making a trip to woodcraft and put a EX on order. Seyco still shows the EX16 out of stock, so looks like for now I may get my wish and be getting my EX I wanted.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Pre-stretching of blades?
« on: December 28, 2013, 06:59:29 pm »
As I was drooling over the vids on youtube of the EX saws one said its best to pre-stretch the blade, he showed on a EX of a new blade, installed showed how loose it was, tightened it down was perfect ran saw about 5 seconds, then all he did was undo the tension lever and it was WAY loose, said he did this for every new blade installed, instead of having to retension part way through a project. I don't know how true this would be, I do find on my craftsman after a new blade and cutting for a bit it seems like the tension gets a tad loose, wonder of this is from the blade stretching, wonder if there is any truth to this or if its a myth.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Torn between Dewlt or Excaliber
« on: December 21, 2013, 11:16:12 pm »
I am really thinking about stepping up my game on my saw, I have a 16 inch craftsman that has been serving me well and more than likely will still keep me happy, but it comes a time when you want better. I think my skills are out growing the craftsman and I want something more high end, better built and more accurate. I have researched both, prices are about the same EX a tad higher but not by much. I have a woodcraft about 30 miles from me I think has both in stock.

I read a review on a forum on both, he was very happy with EX, not so with dewalt. Dewalt main issue he said was it does not like to hold the blades very well, more so on the top clamp, second it had a aggressive cut from the front to back blade movement. Over all it wasn't a bad saw was just he had issues from day one. The Ex he did say was great, tilting head, smooth, arm would stay up when changing blades or holes, one thing he disliked was it was slow to cut not as aggressive as the Dewalt, but also from this was very accurate, easy control so his cuts were spot on. Thats kinda where my skills need some work, accurate on the cuts, my craftsman no matter what has some vibration to it, pending more so how the blade is mounted, making sharp accurate cuts hard to make. I also watched vid on the EX features and thought it was pretty nice, the tension lever up front was nifty, he he didn't have to loosen the tension knob just the lever, remove blade up the arm, move to new hole, then back at it.

If was to get a dewalt how do I found out what type it is if its used? Would rather buy new, seyco is out of stock on the EX16, but woodcraft has it for the same price plus not paying shipping and having to wait.

So I guess the question is which one to buy to last me from here on out? Any issues other than what I mentioned? I haven't heard of any problems with the EX, other than what is the table made of? Hopes its not cast I am tired of fighting rust on my table or having to keep a thin board on it. Would be nice to catch a deal on good EX, but am willing to buy it new if it will outlast me and make my hobby more fun and in turn maybe into a business when I go to retire.
