Intarsia / Light House
« on: December 26, 2014, 01:01:31 am »
I made a light house picture for my mother in law a few years ago. My wife has wanted one ever since. So this past summer I started playing with a design. I got most of it done and posted on here to have someone help me with the pattern. Spirit Horse finalized the pattern for me. I worked on it a bit here and a bit there.

This is the final project. I used 2 boards of blue pine. One for the sky and one for the water. I hand picked them out from an online store. The light house is Padauk and Maple. The boat is Satin and Purple Heart. The front land is Monkey Pod and the back land is Cherry.

I am not the best at intarsia, but I think this one turned out pretty nice. My wife got it for Christmas.

Brag Forum / All the way from the North Pole!
« on: December 06, 2014, 09:32:41 pm »
Okay, so the gift I got wasn't really from the North Pole....but when you live in Phoenix, AZ anything from Canada might as well be from the N.P.

I did't get my name in for the Christmas exchange, but Fab4 (Paul) said he would trade ornaments with me. I have his in the mail this weekend...but got the ones he sent. They are some pretty nice pieces to decorate our tree and house.

The Snowman one is hanging in an ornament hanger. It is on our TV stand on top of the DVD player. The tree lights sparkle on the machine making it more festive. The thing next to it is a mailbox with my wife's name on it. We do small gifts in our mail boxes up til Christmas.

Hope mine get to you in one piece each. Thanks and Merry Christmas.

The Coffee Shop / So Happy I Could Cry
« on: September 12, 2014, 03:07:27 am »
My wife works at a school. She showed the art teacher some of my work and some of the intarsia projects. He was pretty impressed, especially when he found out I have only been working on a scroll saw for less than 3 years. Then came the good news. He also works on a scroll saw and has a shop at his house. Recently a friend of his offered to give him an almost new scroll saw. She does not know what kind, only that it is worth about $600. He told her he will get it and sell it to her for $20. He was looking for more, but he knows I am unemployed and he loved my work. So soon....I will have a new scroll saw. I couldn't believe it.

I have an update to this. Today he told my wife that he is giving it to me free. I should have it in about a week from now. He is also interested in meeting me and maybe getting together for some work on a project or two.

Pattern Requests. / Need Help on Making an Intarsia Pattern
« on: July 11, 2014, 10:24:38 pm »
I am trying to make a pattern, not too difficult, but one that would have a light house and a sail boat. I have put together somewhat of an idea. The boat would be nice with just two sails. Anyone good at making patterns? I would like this to be about a foot and a half wide.

Pattern Requests. / Wooden Log Boxes
« on: June 14, 2014, 01:26:39 am »
I am not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I am wanting to make some boxes with drawers in them out of a pine log. I saw some while on vacation in Williams, AZ. Basically they are about 3 to 5 inches thick and have like a small drawer for jewelry in them. Does anyone know how to make these using a scroll saw?

Brag Forum / 20th Anniversary Gift and Story behind it.
« on: June 06, 2014, 02:30:32 am »
Okay, June 4th was my 20th Anniversary. Here is how much my wife and I think alike. First of all we got each other a couch and loveseat as a gift. So I was thinking that was all the gift giving. Then she tells me she is making me something....and it is a secret. She had me stumped for a whole week.  So I decide to make her a heart shared box out of Maple. I get it dona and think what to put in it. Can't afford anything. So I decide on a bunch of notes telling of our memories for 20 years.

Gift is all wrapped up and we are at Black Angus for dinner. She gives me the gift she made. It is a glass jar with little cut out hearts that she decoupaged to the jar. Inside it are 20 years of memories all written out for me.

Brag Forum / Hickory Wood
« on: May 17, 2014, 11:09:15 pm »
Okay, so I went to the Woodworkers Source and as usual I went through some of the scrap wood bin. Found some Hickory. The sales person told me that Hickory is too hard to cut on a scroll saw. Well, it is hard, but not by any means too hard. Here is a small cross I made showing both side.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Hickory Wood

I got some Hickory today from a scrap bin. One of the sales people told me Hickory is too hard to cut with a scroll saw and that it will break all my blades. Has anyone on here ever cut Hickory or is this man pretty much right?

Brag Forum / Cross
« on: March 16, 2014, 03:56:49 am »
I have been off this site for some time. Been working at my new job so not much time for working on new things. I have been making a lot of the Story Cross that I posted last time. Making about 8 of them for sale. I was buying more wood and the store had this piece of scrap. So I decided to see what I could do with it. This cross ended up about 10 in tall by 6 wide.

The Coffee Shop / Problem with pattern download.

I was trying to download the Owl pattern from this site. Instead of going to the pattern it just sent me in a loop to the same page. Anyone else have this kind of trouble?

Pattern Requests. / Names to Hang on Wall
« on: February 10, 2014, 12:40:16 pm »
Recently I have had 2 requests for names that could be hung on a wall. Does anyone know of a software or tool to make patterns for names? I know the one on the website does names for a desk or key chain, but I need one that creates them to look good on a wall.

Brag Forum / Easter Story Cross Modification
« on: February 03, 2014, 10:38:48 pm »
I have had several people I know wanting me to make them this cross for Easter. I have 9 orders to make. I modified it a bit to suit what people wanted. Many of them asked to have it hang on the wall. So I made it where they can hang it or display it on a table or shelf. I also enlarged the pattern and extended the bottom so that the cross is 12 inches exactly.

Brag Forum / Padauk Cross
« on: January 21, 2014, 01:27:48 am »
Here is a Padauk Cross I made. The first picture is how it looks right now. The 2nd picture is the way I want it to look. I have a metal accent to glue in place, but not sure if wood glue will work or do I need some other kind of glue. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

I made this cross out of Padauk. I want to glue this metal ornamental cross to the center. Not sure if normal Gorilla Wood Glue will stick to both the wood and metal. Anyone ever glue a metal item to wood? If so I am open to suggestions.

This is one of my favorite crosses to make. Normally I make them about 3 in tall and hang them from the car or truck rear view mirror. Today I decided to make a bigger one.
