General Scroll Saw Talk / Spiral Blades on MDF
« on: September 20, 2014, 08:11:42 am »
I need to cut some large items too big to turn on my EX21, so I was thinking about using spiral blades. I will be cutting 1/2" MDF, which I have never used before and also have never used spiral blades. Will spiral blades cut MDF without leaving blade marks or causing it to flake? There are no small fret cuts, so I will be able to sand most of the cuts? Also, what size would be best?

General Scroll Saw Talk / Scrolling MDF
« on: September 08, 2014, 12:24:46 am »
Well, I am sure this topic has been discussed before, but, I have not found all the information I desire. A friend asked me to cut some wood figures for her to attach to doors and to make wall decorations. She has been ordering on line and paying a good price plus shipping. The items are mostly made from MDF. I told her I use mostly Baltic Birch and would price the items using that wood. Well, the price was too much, compared to MDF. I have never used MDF, so, could ya'll please tell me how it cuts and if the dust is really bad?

General Scroll Saw Talk / Clocks at Shows
« on: August 05, 2014, 09:50:24 am »
I sell mostly crosses, ornaments, and wall hangers at craft show but was thinking about adding some clocks to my inventory. Do clocks sell good at arts and crafts shows and if so, what type? Now, I am not talking about fancy fretwork clocks with hours of cutting involved; just simple ones with subject related themes such as animals, transportation, etc. Thanks in advance for your comments.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Dust Mask a Must for Me
« on: July 18, 2014, 09:50:56 am »
Well, I got so tired of wearing my dust mask, especially in this hot Texas weather. I decided to go without it for a while. Big mistake! I developed a sinus infection right away! My right eye felt like it was being pushed out of the socket! I had been using an MSA half face mask with the two filters on either side and I really got too hot, so, I went to Home Depot and bought some 3M wood dust masks that I will have to replace every few days, but, a little cooler. I learned my lesson though, no more sawing without my masks. Mind you, I have one fan beside me and one fan behind me, but, the dust will still find a way in my nose without the masks! Just a little dusty information!LOL

General Scroll Saw Talk / Back of Wood Flaking
« on: June 05, 2014, 07:14:15 pm »
I recently have had problems with Baltic Birch, 1/8"and 1/4" flaking on the back, especially on fret work cuts. I have not experienced this before. Could it be just bad wood or the  wood being effected by temperature in my shop? I do not run the heaters unless I am in the shop during the cold months and now that it has heated up considerably, I run my fans and ac only when I am in the shop.

I am having problems with Yahoo Sports loading. I am using IE and Chrome as search engines. At times it will load just fine and other times not at all or the main page will load and not the topics on the page. This just started about a week ago. Anybody else experience these problems?

General Scroll Saw Talk / No More Northern Tool
« on: March 06, 2014, 05:19:37 pm »
Well, I went to a Northern Tool for the first time today and it will be the last! I purchased a hand truck and when I got home, I checked out their website and found the same hand truck on sale for $30.00 less. I called the store and guess what? I would have to drive back to the store (100 miles) to get a refund! They said it was impossible to keep up with the prices on the internet vs the in store prices! Sounds like this company needs a new marketing manager! Since it was paid with a card, all they need to do is pull the transaction up on their system and credit my card for $30.00!! Well, no more purchases from this lousy retailer!

General Scroll Saw Talk / Good Craft Show Canopy
« on: March 04, 2014, 09:21:18 am »
I have used an economical E-Z Up canopy for 3 years now and it is starting to wear out. I believe I paid around $70.00 for it. Now, I am wanting a canopy with walls to protect us and my scrollwork from the elements. I do not want to spend a lot of money, so I have been looking at the E-Z Up with four walls attached with zippers and the prices vary from $219.99 to $259.00, depending on the vendor and shipping costs. I realize there are more expensive and better canopies available. The ones I have noticed are in the $800.00 range and above. I guess my question is do any of ya'll use the E-Z Up to which I am referring and if so, have you been satisfied? I really do not like outdoor events, but, more and more are becoming available in my area and I just want to be better prepared with protection if we decide to enter these. Thank ya'll in advance for your candid advice and opinions.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Ornament Time Again Already!
« on: December 31, 2013, 04:02:58 pm »
Well, What a short break! My wife and I were planning on taking a short break from making Christmas items (maybe August or September), but a customer just called and ordered 300 ornaments to be delivered in a couple of months for next Christmas! So, fixing to order the wood and blades and get started. And I thought we were retired??! LOL!! Good thing is we both really enjoy scrolling and until the weather gets warmer for outside activities, we will have something to do that we enjoy!

General Scroll Saw Talk / Shop Vac on Bucket
« on: December 21, 2013, 09:59:48 am »
Has anyone tried the shop vac that fits on a 5 gal bucket? I saw them yesterday at Home Depot and my wife suggested trying it on one of my scroll saws. It would not take up much room, but, I am concerned about noise and the motor lasting?

Computer questions / Cannot Open YouTube
« on: December 07, 2013, 09:07:15 am »
I have always used IE for my default browser. I recently downloaded Google Chrome for a try. Now, I cannot open YouTube with IE. When clicking on the YouTube icon, my computer goes back to Google.com, which is my home page. If I use Google Chrome, I can access YouTube. Any thoughts on this? Do I need to delete Google Chrome or IE?

Brag Forum / Boy Scout Ornament
« on: December 01, 2013, 11:15:57 pm »
Here is the Boy Scout ornament that I had requested a pattern for and Ray (EIEIO) drew this pattern for me. I apologize for it not being exactly as the pattern. I have run out of wood, so, I had to use some cabinet wood scraps and it just did not corporate; the very small cuts simply flaked off. So, I did the best I could and the lady that requested the ornaments just loved them! Thank you Ray!
