Pattern Requests. / Way of the Cross Pattern
« on: January 12, 2017, 06:11:46 pm »
One of our US supply houses had a "way of the cross" pattern made of 3 1/3" sq maple stations with 2 "cross" versions for the backing.  I've admired it very time I received their new catalog, however, now that I have a real purpose for making it -it's gone. I keep most supply catalogs until a newer one comes out, but I think it's gone- period.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?  Thanks in advance. Cheers Brian

Jim - whenever I come up to a warped appliqué I will clamp my cutting atop the backer to a third 3/4" thick piece. Don't rush the dry time. Weights can also be used for center pieces in question. Good luck and cheers Brian

Welcome JMB, I am Brian from South Dakota. Seems we have a couple things in common. First the Snow and then our starter saws. from the sounds of it you're already into a saw upgrade. I've been in the hobby for 6 years now and have up graded 4 times more than I want my wife to know. This hobby is additive. Keep warm and enjoy.  Cheers. Brian

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Foot switch
« on: November 27, 2016, 01:20:01 am »
My standing days are over and I use a stool on both my Hagner and RBI. Because both machines are on their own steel stands, I find it uncomfortable to reach so far with my right foot to the dead man switch. So I elevate my switch. Presently I am using a styrofoam shipping shell from something purchased in the past. (This old German doesn't through to many things away.) It brings the switch up about 6-8" off the ground. This helps with ankle fatigue. Just what I've gotten used to.
I do like the idea of the mounting the switch between the knees on the stand. The knee pressing would the same effect 😄 As that exercise to help with bladder control. Cheers Brian

In addition to a backer board try a needle point bit. Regular metal drill points bullnose there way through the material. Needle point drills like forester bits cut the outer diameter first before cleaning out the hole. But even these bits will chip out the bottom if dull, forced aggressively, or not held down firmly enough. I try to always try to have a sacrificial board attached to my work so I can not worry about bottom chipping. Good luck. Cheers Brian

Brag Forum / A Good (Steve) Halloween
« on: October 31, 2016, 01:19:01 pm »
Thanks again to Steve I'm ready for Halloween.  Just finished the Coffin in time to add it to my "Steve decorations".  They're all out & ready for the kids. Haven't figured out just where to put the coffin - I don't want him to be "one of the walking dead" and leave.  ;)  Thanks for looking. Cheers Brian

My money goes on the small wheel being a slack take-up wheel.  If I'm right your photo shows the working side of the system on the left with the belt on the right going up in direction. The small "take-up" wheel would be loosened and allowed to swing to the right and apply enough to pressure against the belt on the photo right to take up any slack the belt has as it goes around. I would have thought your operator manual would have explained the small wheels purpose.  Best of luck. Brian

Judy - I am not a spiral fan for because of the blade breakage. However, some projects leave me no choice. Hence, my feeling on the matter. I've found FD flat end blades have helped me and more importantly very little tension without tightening the blade clamp. I must admit the lack of tension does allow my blade to flex more than I want. But that's my trade off for "no breakage". I am going to keep my eye on this post. I too would like the real answere.  Cheers Brian

The Coffee Shop / Re: Table saw tech. Help!
« on: July 15, 2016, 01:04:31 am »
Fella's -Thanks for your input & safty concerns but I have been using this Grizzle saw for 20 years now and the blade height movement hasn't been a problem because all I've used it for is cross tableing or ripping. For the first time, I want to put my datto blades in and put a 1/4" grove in a 1/2" thick board. I find if the knob on the height adjustment wheel is somewhere other than at 12 or 6 o'clock, the weight of the nob settles ( turns ) back towards 6 o'clock. My dad taught my to always bring my bland up to it's setting and still I find I lose 1/32 (give or take). I may be reaching the limit of a moderately price saw but I'm not about to replace it with a more expensive saw. Thanks for your inputs.  Cheers Brian

The Coffee Shop / Table saw tech. Help!
« on: July 12, 2016, 07:18:45 pm »
I have some small boxes with scroll sawn lids - I'd like to make. The scrolling - no problem. My table saw is the question. I'm to grove the six separate sides to receive the top for the lid and the six sides for the bottom. My problem is setting the height of my datto. After doing test runs and I restart my saw the blade desires to pick a new height. I can't find any adjustment or knob to secure my setting.  Any advice? Thanks Brian
