General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Blades cutting like cutting butter.... :+}
« on: November 27, 2011, 06:00:59 pm »
I only do inlays so I am cutting 3/4" of material ( Stacked 3/8" each).   When the blade starts cutting slowly I change it out with a new blade.  I save the old blades and cut off the bottom 3/4" of them with a tin snip and then I have a "new" blade, just shorter. My Hegner will adjust to this shorter blade.  Will your saw?

"Actually replacing the blade does require the key, but it's as easy to use as anything else would be.  Am I missing something?"

I agree Cathy.
I have two Hegnars and like them.  The DeWalt I had before them had an easier blade changing system but the quality of the saw was unacceptable. (It fell apart) The Hegner system just takes time to get used to.  I do not do fretwork , just double bevel Inlays ,so there is a lot less threading the blade though drilled holes.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: package tape

I do a lot of double bevel inlays...about 25 a week... and I use packing tape on the underside of the wood .  It serves as a good lubricant against the scroll saw table.  The wood slides and turns very well like this.

Just another idea for making pull toys.  The balls spin when toy is pulled.

Ever notice that wives think our time is all theirs and whatever they want done we are to drop what we're doing and do it right then?
Yup I'm well trained too!  ::)

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: A Curious Question About Speed
« on: June 21, 2011, 03:05:21 pm »
I asked this on another thread, but I can see it's most pertinent here.

I've always taken my time with my cutting, and was always wondering how I compare with others.  When I see vidoes of other scrollers, it looks like they're buzzing through faster than sh....er....very quickly.

It took me between 40-45 hours to do the chess set and board.  For those who've done this project before, how long did it take you?

TIA,

Bill
A friend of mine does compound cutting of chess pieces and tells me it takes him about 1/2 hour per piece. = 16 hours  I make the chessboard with storage drawer for him and it takes me about 24 hours so our total is about the same as yours.

Introduce Yourself. / Hello From Texas
« on: June 12, 2011, 11:56:30 am »
Hello,
My name is Jim ...and I am a scroll sawyer.
I live in Lubbock Texas and have a small woodworking workshop in my garage.  I have two Hegner scroll saws beside other wood working tools and enjoy playing with them about 35 hours a week.  I am a retired sheet metal worker but now I make sawdust most days.  I have made a LOT of toys with  my scroll saw.  I have done a few pieces of intarsia and lately I have been making lots of cedar boxes with inlayed images in the lids.  I have made some of the Steve good projects too. (Flowers etc.)
I sell my woodworking projects at street-craft fairs here, about twice a month.  I look forward to getting more ideas and inspiration in this forum
