Introduce Yourself. / Re: Hey Ya'all
« on: October 02, 2017, 08:32:32 am »
Hello, my name is Ray and I go by Octoolguy as I used to sell tools here in Orange County, Cal. U.S.A. I just joined the forum here today and I want to say thanks to Steve Good for putting this together.

I first got interested in scroll saw marquetry a couple of years ago but have been slow to get up and running. Many other things have taken precedence but now I am freed up. I bought a used DW788 type 1 and have been busy getting it all squared away and building a stand for it as the tubular stand that came with it was junk. That is now done and I am ready to learn the art of scroll sawing. I hope to learn a lot from hanging out here and at other scroll saw forums.

Scroll saw marquetry is the same as "Double bevel inlay"  .... I think.  I do a lot of it and it is fun.  Welcome.

Yes,  I sell them for $10 each.  Any more than they do not sell well, here.  I have done so many inlays that that they are easy and quick to make, for me.  It takes me longer to make the boxes than it does to do the inlays.  Besides, these are fun to make.

Sold some of these today.  Cedar, tissue box cover, with maple inlay.

DeWalt's lack of durability is why I got rid of mine years ago (2008) and got a Hegner.  No problems with it after 8 years.

The post office offered old PO Box fronts for sale to postal employees and the general public, years ago.  I got mine from the widow of a postal worker.  I see there are plenty of them offered on e-bay.

So far I have sold two of them.  Two more left.  Lots of people admire them but few feel the need to buy a coin bank anymore.

Very nice!  I have inlaid this same image into  box lids and it looked very good.  Too bad few others agreed with that.  It took me almost a year to sell it.  Never made a second one .

Toy Makers / Best sellers in toys.

Along with my boxes, with images and lettering inlaid into the hinged lids, I make and sell toys.  My best sellers are rubber band shooters.  Pistols and long guns. The sales of these always covers my space rent.  I made over two hundred of them for this year but I see by the past five Saturdays at the farmers market, that I will run out of them before the end of the season.  So, today I started in on making one hundred additional shooters.  Hope this gets me through the season. Sold a bunch of T-Rex toys also.

Toys always sell well.  I make rubber band shooters and always sell enough to pay my space rent.  Wooden T-Rex's also sell well.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Blades

I cut thick pine to make toys.  I use an Olsen #7 precision ground blade with good results.  What concerns me, with your original post, is that you are concerned with cutting speed.  A scroll saw is the slowest cutting saw in any workshop.  If you push too much to cut faster you will get a crooked cut and will dull and break blades easily.  Slow down  your cut, and remember a scroll saw cuts  faster across the grain and slower with the grain.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Foot Switch
« on: May 28, 2017, 08:34:10 am »
I have the step-on, step-off, floor switches from harbor freight also.  I have one on each of  my two scroll saws, band saw, drill press, and on two stationary sanders.  I do not want to have to hold my foot to a certain place in order to run my equipment so I did not get the switch that requires one to keep their foot on it.  I used to have to do that when TIG welding and realised what a pain that can become.

I just did an image search on the internet and found a line drawing and used it..  I have since made this horse using non movable legs.  The photo in my first post  is  of one with movable legs.

I make simple wooden toys using my scroll saw.  Just today I delivered 250 of them to our local children's hospitals.  Most made of pine but some made of poplar.
