I have an idea to make american flags using walnut for the normaly blue background for the white stars.  I have a leather tooling tool the shape of a 3/8" star that I use with a sharp blow to put an indent into the walnut.  I then fill that void with baby powder mixed with white glue and it looks great until, after it dries and I sand off the surface the walnut dust gets into the white.  Same results by scraping instead of sanding.  I have done things like this a lot with great results but using white seems not to work for me.  I have tried using exoxy or finishing resin but they become pretty dark looking, even before sanding.

Does anone have any ideas to solve this problem?  A different material?  A different glue? All I can think of, I have tried, but others may have a better idea/solution.

Yes  I am here to pick your brain.

General Scroll Saw Talk / She may want 500 of them.
« on: May 01, 2016, 07:50:24 pm »
Still figuring out exactly what is needed, but this is one idea.

I am making a few different items for consideration by a customer for five hundred Christmas gifts for a large organization, to give out to donors, I think.   About five inches tall.  Painted star and stained cedar.  Hope this works out.  It is a work in progress but just in the planning stage so far. If this works out it will keep me busy throughout the summer I bet.

« on: December 05, 2015, 09:09:56 pm »
I make and sell cedar boxes with images of maple inlaid into the hinged lids.  I attend about twenty-five sales a year and this was my last one today.   I sold thirty-five of these boxes plus a few other items. (star and toys).  My best this year was thirty- nine and my average is about twelve so this was a great ending to a busy year.  My next scheduled sale is in mid June 2016

Brag Forum / Wedding Couple inlay

This is a 16" tall wall hung plaque, made to order. 3/8" Cedar and maple and lettering is Mesquite.  The angel was tricky to do but I did get it on the first try.  I put the lettering inside the smaller maple heart so that I did not have to swing the larger heart all around while doing the inlay of the letters.

« on: May 10, 2014, 05:43:28 pm »
Does anyone know of a source for information regarding minimum wheel size on toys according to the new rules on toys.  I have read it mentioned somewhere that the minimum size is 1 1/4".  I would like to find out.

Brag Forum / Inlay I finished this week
« on: May 09, 2014, 08:44:25 am »
The buyer ordered three of these.  His design and his idea to put the year on the front panel of this 11 x 8 box.  I may make some local school/collage logos on box lids with 2014 inlaid into the front panel like this.  I think it would made a nice graduation gift. Cedar box with maple and oak inlays.  These boxes are to be awarded to the officers of a Masonic lodge who served in 2013.

I made ten of these 4 1/2" x3/8" crosses to be hung on a rear view mirror.  Folks here in West Texas collect crosses so these should sell easily. I was given a small piece of Lace-wood so I used it to make these. Tung oil and spray on clear finish.
