General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Beginner/Blades
« on: February 18, 2018, 09:54:54 am »
Most scroll saws use pinless (plain end) blades so i will assume your saw uses them.  Many of the people on the forum use Flying Dutchman blades from Wooden Teddy Bear http://www.woodenteddybearonline.com/x/home.php.  To get your started, they have a variety pack of 12 of 5 different blades.  It's a good way to try different blades to find what works for you.

You will also find different people will use different blades for the same cut.  Again it is what you find works for you so don't be afraid to experiment.

Good luck.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Re: Air hose repair on a De Walt
« on: February 15, 2018, 06:57:34 am »
The air hose is made of plastic sections. Heating it with a heat gun will let you force the bell over the ball.  Just did it on my saw, it was very easy, once it was heated.

Good luck,
Jim

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Foot pedal
« on: February 14, 2018, 11:21:22 pm »
My first thought was yes, use a foot switch.  Then I read the soft-start comment and started to re-think my answer.

If the stop-start switch on the saw is a simple on-off switch - like a light switch, then a foot switch should be OK as it is also an on-off switch.  If there are electronics built into the saw's switch, then it might be a different matter.

I don't know your saw but if the parts diagram shows a switch and a separate circuit board for the speed control and soft start, then your foot switch should be OK.

I wonder if anyone else has tried a foot switch with your saw.  Perhaps if you post the model number you could get a more definite answer.

Good luck,
Jim

If you are mechanically handy you have nothing to loose by opening it up to see if anything is broken or bent.  You might be able to separate the motor from the rest of the mechanism to see if it runs that way.  It may come down to needing to replace some bearings. If you can get the bearings out, a bearing shop may have replacements.

After 20 years, old grease may be gummed up and would need to be replaced.

Good luck,
Jim

I think you are correct but it has an LED so it must be an electronic blade leveler.   ;)

The Coffee Shop / Re: Doctor advises pregnant women to walk every day

Norm, I got the joke in an email and posted it here.  I certainly didn't make it up myself.  Glad you decided to forward it.

I have my shop in the basement and yes, my wife agreed to it although she doesn't like it when I run the planner.   :(

The Coffee Shop / Doctor advises pregnant women to walk every day
« on: January 19, 2018, 04:13:03 pm »
The room was full of pregnant women with their husbands.

The instructor said, "Ladies, remember that exercise is good for you. Walking is especially beneficial. It strengthens the pelvic muscles and will make delivery that much easier. Just pace yourself, make plenty of stops and try to stay on a soft surface, like grass or a path.”

"Gentlemen, remember -- you're in this together. It wouldn't hurt you to go walking with her. In fact, that shared experience would be good for you both.”

The room suddenly became very quiet as the men absorbed this information.

After a few moments a man at the back of the room slowly raised his hand.

"Yes?" said the Instructor.

"I was just wondering if it would be all right if she carries a golf bag while we walk?"

This level of sensitivity can't be taught.

The Coffee Shop / But Dust
« on: December 29, 2017, 01:34:06 pm »
A visiting minister during the offertory prayer:

"Dear Lord," he began with arms extended and a rapturous look on his upturned face, "without you we are but dust..."

He would have continued, but at that moment one very obedient little girl (who was listening carefully for a change) leaned over to her mother and asked quite audibly in her shrill little girl voice:

"Mommy, WHAT is butt dust?"

Out of the mouths of babes.

Don't know Corel paint but, based on other similar programs, you might have swapped the foreground and background colours.  Sorry I can't be more help but, with luck, this might point you in the right direction.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Thumb screw fix?
« on: December 03, 2017, 01:52:17 pm »
Sheila, my description probably doesn't use the correct term.  When I say "anvil" - it is circled in red in the attached photo - I assume your reference to the "little pad" is to the same part.

I cleaned the shaft of the "little pad" and the hole it goes into with a damp Kleenex and have let it dry out completely.  It is turning much more freely in the thumbscrew body now.  No oil.

Thanks again,
Jim

« on: December 03, 2017, 12:34:26 pm »
Sheila, thanks for you comments.  I will probably have to replace the thumbscrew one day but am trying to postpone the day.

I found that Seyco has a replacement anvil for the thumbscrew so I screwed up my courage, got out the needle nose pliers, and with a gentle pull of the anvil separated from the body of the thumbscrew.   :D  It seems to be held in by the friction of a tiny O-ring on the shaft of the anvil.

I'm going to try cleaning it with a damp cloth and see how it goes.  I will put spare replacement chucks, thumbscrews, and set screws on my to-do list but now can continue with my Christmas scrolling.

Thanks,
Jim

General Scroll Saw Talk / Thumb screw fix?
« on: December 03, 2017, 10:24:46 am »
The thumb screws on my Delta 40-690, the DW-788 clone, need some help.  The rotating part (anvil?) that contacts the blade doesn't rotate as easily as it should.  Can it be fixed?

Can I remove the anvil? How?  It it comes off, do I clean it and then lube it with a tiny drop of sewing machine oil or . . .?

Is ti enough to squirt some WD-40 into the gap between the screw and the anvil and work the anvil around?

I will appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks,
Jim
