The Coffee Shop / My thoughts exactly
« on: October 26, 2018, 11:02:23 pm »
I am 80 years old and love to fish.

I was sitting in my boat the other day when I heard a voice say, "Pick me up."

I looked around but couldn't see any one.

I thought I was dreaming when I heard the voice say again, "Pick me up."

I looked in the water and there, floating on the top, was a frog.

So I said, "Are you talking to me?"

The frog said, "Yes, I'm talking to you. Pick me up, then kiss me and I' ll turn into the most beautiful woman you have ever seen. I'll make sure that all your friends are envious and jealous because I will be your bride!"

I took a look at the frog for a short time, reached over, picked her up carefully, and placed her in my front breast pocket.

Then the frog said, "What, are you nuts? Didn't you hear what I just said? I said kiss me and I will be your beautiful bride."

I opened my pocket, looked at the frog and said,

"Nah, at my age I'd rather have a talking frog."

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: DeWalt 788 question
« on: October 22, 2018, 08:59:14 am »
If you do buy the DW788 (or the Delta clone), it actually isn't that hard to lubricate the bearings on the saw and it gives you a much better appreciation of the internal mechanism that makes the blade go up and down.

If you would like to have a guide to follow on getting at the bearings, and on how to lube them, see this link.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNt2Y0ajDwk  It is the first of 4 videos that step through the process of getting into, lubricating, and getting back out of the saw.

The vids have been added to with another at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3P4E1At82lc&feature=youtu.be

The work does take a few tools and you have to be careful to support the saw when it is opened up.  It is an easy process once you get started.  I did it and learned that it is a good plan to take pictures of each step to help with re-assembly.

Good luck with whatever saw you select.

Just spent some time on the Burma-Shave.org web site.  Good memories.  Didn't know the signs started in the late 20s - before my time.

Thanks for the menories.

When I was a kid, we always looked ahead to find the Burma Shave signs.  Then we would all read them aloud as each came by.

Good memories. Thanks

Ask Steve a question. / Re: Using iSocket with DW788
« on: July 13, 2018, 09:42:24 am »
Have you sorted it out yet?

Not sure I understand your setup.  Is it wall outlet => iSocket => foot switch => DW788?  Where is the vacuum connected in this?

I think it would be wall outlet => foot switch => iSocket => DW788 and to the vacuum.

Hope this gives you something to try.

Let us know.

I have the Delta 60-694, the DW788 clone and have somewhat the same front-to-back blade movement.  The movement was larger but I followed the instructions on Rick's site http://www.scrollsaws.com/ under Dewalt Tuneup to elongate the lower arm mounting holes, and got it down to about 1/32".

That was good enough for me until I cut Steve's "Jesus Loves" 3D pattern out of poplar.  Making the last cuts across the top of the base left some cut marks on part of the top of the base.  I like some front-to-back movement helps clear sawdust, especially on 1.5" thick wood.

Your mileage may vary.

It could be anything from a minor irritation to something more serious.  I'd suggest you check with a doctor, just in case there might be, or lead to a more serious condition.  It might also be as simple as taking a break more often.

Good luck,
Jim

I also use the deadman type, perhaps on Steve's recommendation.  Never tried the other type and agree with eburk about searching for the switch when a blade breaks.

Steve gives advice on scroll sawing, not rules.  To each his own but there is nothing wrong with considering other's opinion.  Remember, my free advice is worth what you pay for it.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Dewalt dw788 tilt issue
« on: April 16, 2018, 08:43:33 am »
Out of left field, I'd try loosening the 2 screws that hold the table to the half-circle that holds up the working end of the table.  Try tilting the table and see if it is easier.  If it is, you have found the problem area.

The only other thing I could think of would be greasing the pivot at the other end of the table.

Good luck and let us know what you find.

Computer questions / Re: program that converts document to pdf file
« on: March 19, 2018, 08:42:37 am »
I use CutePDF http://cutepdf.com/ which installs in the computer.  It becomes a system printer so that when you click on print in a program, CutePDF is an option.  It great works on any Windows program I have used.

The site also has a free PDF editor - on-line, I think.

Woodrush, that's really frustrating.  Bet there were a few choice words uttered, or at least thought.   ;D  I have had some success gluing breaks in cuttings. Try to use as little glue as possible to minimize squeeze-out.

Steve has two ship in a bottle patterns.  I assume you did the one without a backing board.  How would it look if you glued it onto a backer board, either rectangular or cut to the shape of the bottle?

Considering the time and effort you put into it, repair is worth a try.  Let us know how it turns out.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: DW788 knob Mod
« on: March 05, 2018, 07:31:58 am »
Gabe,

You have joined the ranks of those who have made a new knob to help clamping the blade.  With a larger handle, you can put more torque on the knob which could damage the clamp assembly.  This http://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.ca/2015/07/technical-question.html?m=1 has some good suggestions and a warning about possible damage from over-torquing the larger knob.

Your replacement bolt doesn't have the rotating tip that is on the original - see the first picture in the link.  If you prefer your new knob, you could replace the set screw on the left of the clamp with the knob from the right side.  This will reduce twisting of the blade as you clamp it in place.

Hope this helps,
Jim

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Re: Patterns peel off
« on: February 20, 2018, 09:09:49 am »
Overfifty, before applying the painter's tape, make sure the wood is clean - no sawdust on the surface and try to make sure the edges of the tapes strips line up nicely with no overlap or gaps.  Once the pattern is applied, I run a small roller over the whole pattern to make sure there are no air bubbles or places where it didn't stick well.

Some are using Walmart clear shelf liner https://www.walmart.com/ip/Shelf-Liner-Roll-Clear-12-inches-x-30-feet/16224481 instead of painter's tape.

If the pattern lifts, I grab a bit of scotch type tape to hold that area down.  Generally it works well enough to get through the area.

Hope this helps.
