Ask Steve a question. / Toy Box
« on: July 15, 2016, 11:02:45 am »
In your post today you mention making a toy box.  I hope you post a picture as I face the same request to the honey do list all the time.

I have a birthday for my "grand" niece next week and I made the jewellery box by Sue Mey with her initial in it.

Brag Forum / Babysitting = Thanks to Mr. Good
« on: March 25, 2016, 05:21:10 pm »
A few days ago Steve posted a pattern for a flower cat.

Perfect pattern for my Grandkids (9&7) to cut and paint.  They visited today and I had them do everything.  I act as the hold down and partially guide when they scroll but they know how to affix patterns etc.

This pattern works great as if they miss the line by much who cares and if a big bump I have them fix on the sander.

It keeps them busy for quite some time and they love taking home something that they have done.

Thanks Steve

My Granddaughter's school is having a fund raiser and this is my contribution.

Steve's pattern (slightly modified).  Wood is maple and walnut.  Finish is mineral oil and beeswax.

The Coffee Shop / Donations
« on: November 20, 2015, 09:07:51 am »
I just renewed as a supporter to one of the other scroll saw sites and thought I haven't donated to Steve's site in a while.

So I just did.

I thought back to the number of great emails we get and the number of patterns in the vault and it is one great deal.

When renewing your magazines etc.  Think about Scrollsaw workshop too.

Brag Forum / Boomerang Box
« on: October 28, 2015, 07:19:23 am »
I started a Boomerang box last year and it was really successful.  The idea is that if you win you put something back in the box for a draw in 2 weeks.   You can see rules and last years winners at http://www.durhamwoodworkingclub.com/SecondaryPages/CLUBPROJECTS/boomerangbox.html

My name was drawn as the first person so I will win in the last week.

I made a new box and a napkin holder and coasters to match.  Pattern for the napkin holder by Shelia Landry and the coasters modified by me.

Computer questions / Font viewer
« on: August 15, 2014, 08:59:33 am »
I just got the new font viewer from Steve and it is cool.

I design in Inkscape and this will make it easier to view text.  It is clunky and I pinned this to my task bar so it is right there.

QUESTION.

Does any one know of a font viewer that will give me all 256 representation of a font?  I had one but lost it when I changed computers and forgot to bring forward.  This is especially helpful with decorative fonts where the F might be the Christmas tree.

Thanks

Don

Brag Forum / Steve's cheese board modified
« on: March 13, 2014, 09:45:12 am »
Needed a prop for a demo I was giving at my club on cutting boards so I came up with this to show finishing.

Made from cherry and maple with a Tung oil with beeswax finish.

Cheese knife is made from left overs.

PS.  The LOML ordered 5 more for hostess gifts.

Ask Steve a question. / Personalized Ornaments for 2013?????
« on: September 18, 2013, 08:04:29 am »
Steve

I ordered and made your personalized ornaments in 2011 and they were a big hit.  We use them for the place settings at Christmas dinner. (about 20).

Are there any plans for 2013? I am looking for inspiration.  Last year I did personalized sleighs but I think ornaments better idea.

Thanks

Is there a video for the making of the "Be Mine" box or has anyone made it.

I don't understand the interior cuts or how the lid is attached.

Any hints or a picture.

Thanks

This was done at a group build at the Durham Woodworking Club.  I have done this before on the band saw and it took a lot of sanding.  This time using FD UR blades hardly any.

Fun project.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Magnifying lamp
« on: November 26, 2012, 08:40:55 am »
I am looking for a lamp for my scroll saw and the local Busy Bee has the free standing, 90 light LED with 3x magnifying lamp on sale.

My question is should I get the free standing one or the one that clamps on. They are both the same price.

Brag Forum / Made a sign and jig
« on: September 19, 2012, 02:00:17 pm »
I had a request to make a sign for my BIL from my other BIL. (Some sort of inside joke on the size of the shed)

I wanted to do raised letters so I set my saw to 3 degrees (ex-21) and wanted to drill the holes at the same 3 degrees to make the blade feeding easier.  I have an old Crafman drill press the is a real pain to change the angle and then get it back to 90.

I created a table that I can raize and lower to the right angle and then drill the holes.  I use a Wixey to adust the wing nuts on the end.  I now know that 3 degrees is 1.125 inches on the end.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Name Plate Question
« on: September 16, 2012, 09:42:09 am »
I usually make name plates for the Grandkids teachers for Christmas gift.  (Big hit)

This year one of the teachers is a double barrelled name ie Smith-Jones.

Would you think a space would be okay or is there some other way around the dash?

Thanks

Don
