General Scroll Saw Talk / Looking for Project Ideas
« on: July 31, 2017, 09:50:31 am »
While camping in CO I came upon a spruce tree that had broken off and left a large splinter of trunk sticking up in the air.  It looked very interesting and made me think it could be the source for some kind of project.  So I cut it off and brought it home.  The section is 36" tall, the main section is 24" tall by 10 inches wide and about 2 1/2" to 3" thick.

My question is:  if you had this chunk of spruce, what would you do with it??  I'm rolling some things around in my head, but I know there are some "outside the box" creative thinkers here that have some great ideas.  So let me know what you think.

Pattern Requests. / Caribou
« on: August 08, 2014, 09:43:27 am »
I have been looking for a caribou pattern to cut for a friend who got to go caribou hunting and brought home a cow and a bull.  His bull, appropriately named "Bou", is hanging in his living room.  I have done several cuttings for him over the years and would like to do a caribou, but haven't been able to find one.  Anybody???

Thanks in advance for the help!

Brag Forum / One of my favorite designs!
« on: December 15, 2013, 11:05:23 pm »
I just completed this one.  The pictures are of the new one pre and post painting.  The other picture is of the one I made for my wife over 20 years ago.  We hadn't realized how much it had faded and browned with age till we had the new one by it's side!

The Coffee Shop / Ornament Exchange???????
« on: December 02, 2013, 11:18:24 pm »
I'm confused.  I entered the exchange for the first time this year.  I received a name and sent ornaments.  I received an ornament from the person that received my name.  But last week, I received two more ornaments in the mail.  Any ideas what's going on?

Ken

P.S. - I'll post pictures of my new arrivals later.

The Coffee Shop / 2013 Christmas Ornament questions
« on: October 15, 2013, 09:02:53 pm »
This is my first time to participate in the exchange.  From what I've read on the forum, we give you our name and address and you send my name to someone and I get their name.  Then we each make at least one ornament to send to each other.  The one ornament is a minimum, but people commonly send 2, 3 or more.  Correct???

Thanks,
Ken

General Scroll Saw Talk / Arts and Craft Show
« on: January 15, 2013, 10:30:56 pm »
I am working toward an arts and craft show June 1st and am planning on setting up my saw and cutting names during the show - partly to raise interest in my booth and partly to hopefully sell several.  Those of you who do or have done this, what is the easiest/best way to do this?  Do you cut all your blanks ahead of time and how do you set up your lettering for each name request?  What shape or form works best - 3/4" pine without a base - just the name? - script type lettering or block? - etc.?

Thanks for your answers in advance!

General Scroll Saw Talk / 5 x 5 1/4" birch plywood????
« on: December 30, 2012, 11:43:48 pm »
Does anyone have any suggestions about full sheets of 1/4" birch plywood?  Will it stay straight and true in a full sheet?  Would I be better off cutting it into smaller pieces right off the top to keep it flat and free from bowing?

Anybody want to share some experiences?

Thanks,
Ken

General Scroll Saw Talk / Wood Choice Question
« on: December 05, 2012, 04:49:35 pm »
What is your choice of wood for most of the projects you create?  When it calls for 1/2", 1/4" or 1/8" wood for instance?  Most of the work I've done is out of 3/4" pine or 1/4" oak or mahogany plywood.  Just curious what longtimers have found to work best.

Thanks,
Ken

Introduce Yourself. / New Member - Alva, OK
« on: January 06, 2012, 12:15:54 am »
Hello Everyone - I just joined the Scrollsaw Workshop Community forum and figured I needed to introduce myself.  I live in NW Oklahoma - Alva.  I'm a minister of music and enjoy woodworking as a hobby.  We are currently in phase 3 of our house remodel.  We purchased our home in 2009 and totally gutted the bathroom, 2 bedrooms and a closet before we moved in and turned it into a very nice, large bathroom and 1 bedroom and closet.  After we moved in, phase 2 was tearing out the carpet in the kitchen and dining room and installing ceramic tile.  Phase 3 is tearing out built-ins in upstairs bedrooms and totally redoing floor, walls ceiling, lights and ceiling fans.

I've been scroll sawing for 20+ years.  I started out with a very inexpensive Penn State saw, then in the early 90's I upgraded to a variable speed Delta.  It has been a great saw, but I'm ready to step up again to a smoother running, finer cutting saw.  I'm currently comparing the Excalibur and the new Delta/Dewalt saw and would love to hear your experiences and opinions about these 2.  Thanks in advance for any thoughts you might share.

P.S. I have a budget of up to $1K to spend on a scroll saw so if another brand is at the top of your list in that price range, feel free to chime in.  ;-)
