General Scroll Saw Talk / Web Store Recommendation
« on: September 04, 2014, 08:32:47 pm »
D Lawless Hardware
I recently needed some hardware(drawer pulls) for a project I am working on. I found a company that I would like to recommend to you.
D Lawless Hardware www.DLawlesshardware.com
I placed an order on Saturday evening and it arrived on Thursday, even with a mail holiday on Monday. That is pretty quick by my standards. (even beat amazon?s two-day shipping on something I ordered at the same time)
The prices on knobs and pulls are really low, and the quality of the pieces that I received is great. If I had purchased the pieces locally I would have paid several dollars more per knob,  and I ordered 35 pieces so it would add up quickly.
They have a flat rate shipping on all orders under $50. At $10.75 it sounds a bit steep, but really it isn?t too bad. My order plus shipping was still well under what I would have paid locally or at another website I looked at. Plus they offer free shipping on all orders over $50 which for hardware is fairly easy to do
My favorite thing about this company is that they offer a discount for woodshop teachers when buying for school projects. I have spent a ton of personal money on things for student projects over the years and any business that appreciates the things that happen in my shop is awesome.

General Scroll Saw Talk / I got mine!!!
« on: December 04, 2013, 08:46:01 pm »
First, I have to apologize to all of my Canadian friends (and others who have sent me ornaments), but my son has a new favorite country.
This year as we were setting up the Christmas tree, my son helped me put the ornaments that I had gotten from exchanges in the past. He was amazed at all of the fun places that I have friends. (sorry Cherie, but British Columbia was way cooler the Missouri) My son was also amazed at the quality of ornaments that I have received "wow, these are really nice. Your's are ok but these are really nice"
For the last week or so, Canada has been The Location for all cool things. However, today in the mail I got the most beautiful ornaments from Marge in Australia. We had to have a little geography lesson, he was pretty much convinced that Australia had no electricity, food or mail. He was mixing up the African missionary from church with Australia. The Christmas card had a bunch of cool Australian animals that were fun to look at. Once we got that figured out we could really look at the ornaments. There was even a cool ruler with different Australian woods. Noah was really confused about the ruler, there are no inches on it just millimeters.
Needless to say, Noah has a new favorite country for a while. I will post a picture when I can get the photo re-sized on my computer.
Thanks so much!!!

I posted this in the get togethers forum, but didn't get any replies. I am pretty sure I am not the only Minnesotan (or western wisconsin) on the forum. I hope that someone here can make it!!!!

General Scroll Saw Talk / Pattern Storage
« on: July 31, 2012, 05:39:16 pm »
I recently inherited a bunch of magazines and paper patterns from some older Scrollers who are downsizing and I need to rethink how I organize paper patterns. The only paper patterns I had was a file of things my dad designed and what ever I printed (plus the books and magazines)

I was thinking of making subject folders and printing a few of my favorites that would also fit. It seems like a lot of work up front but probably the only way I will find anything in the pile.

I have read that some people scan everything in and only have digital stuff, do any of you actually do that? What about oversized patterns, scanning those seems like a lot of work? Do you keep an index of what is in the files? I typically scan things from the books and magazines as I make copies(if it will fit on my scanner bed) but sitting down and scanning things that I will likely not cut sounds like a waste of time.

How do you store/file magazines and books? Do you have a list of which magazines you have and what is inside so things are easier to find? Do you keep certain topics together (like all of the holiday issues together) do you take them apart and file the projects separately?

Also, where is your storage? In the shop, in the office, someplace else?

So what do you do? Any advise before I start organizing?
Thanks for the input

I decided to color the pig with watered down acrylic paint. the grain comes through but the color is still bright. It is going to be a gift for a friend of mine at work.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Scrapbook Hardware
« on: April 19, 2012, 12:39:16 pm »
I recently made a scrapbook (I'll try to get a picture posted in the gallery in a bit)
Overall I learned alot and have some ideas about the next one I am going to make. But I ran in to a slight problem I am hoping someone can help me with.
To hold the album together I used scrapbook extention posts, they work really well and are easy to find. The cover was hinged using "cute" hinges I found at Menards. The problem for me is that the metals don't match the extention posts are bright silver and the hinges are brass. I looked breifly and couldn't find brass extention posts or silver hinges.
Am I missing something? A few of you have made books, what did you do? Am I the only one who cares about the mis-matched metals?

General Scroll Saw Talk / Baltic Birch Plywood Source
« on: March 23, 2012, 06:17:04 pm »

I usually buy 1/8" ply from Michael's for convenience, but I also get it from Rockler Woodworking sometimes. I hadn't paid exact attention, but I knew the prices were close, and the convience out weighed the drive across town. So, I had some time after work today so I decided to check into the price of BB plywood.

At Michael's I get a piece 12"x24" for $3.99 (which is $1.99 per square foot) a similar size at Rockler 12"x30" is $5.49 (which is $2.20 a square foot) So Michael's is actually a cheaper place to buy that size.
I did the math on all of the sizes of 1/8" bb ply that Rockler has and the square foot prices $1.80-3.99 (sizes 12x30, 12x15, 24x30, 11.75x60, 24x60 if you care) I have to buy a 24"x60" piece to get a better price then Michael's.
Also the Michael's birch plywood is made in Illinois!

I thought I would pass this along to those of you who might be like me and buy smaller pieces of plywood.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Drilling Holes In The Middle
« on: March 17, 2012, 11:13:15 am »
How do you drill holes in the middle of a project if your drill press can't reach?

Most of the time I don't need "crazy" accuracy so I just use my cordless drill and hope I am square. But I have had a few projects lately that I needed more square holes (the projects worked out but it was nerve wracking) and I have one that is sitting waiting on me to drill some center holes because of tight areas.
I know there are several options, but what do you do?

Brag Forum / "Drinking Buddies"
« on: March 11, 2012, 05:25:59 pm »
Grandpa Paul made this pattern for me of my son and his cousin. The original picture was taken at one of the local parks last summer when they found the hose fountian. The kids had so much fun playing in the water that day.
I stack cut 4 from 1/8" baltic birch plywood, and am planing on framing and giving to my mother-in-law and my sister-in-law. This one is framed for me, I haven't decided what type of frame to use for the family.
I also posted the in-progress pictures on my facebook page www.facebook.com/knwoodworking if you have facebook and are interested.
Thanks for looking

Brag Forum / Mario World Play Set
« on: February 07, 2012, 06:58:39 pm »
A while ago I had seen a project by souichiro on Lumberjocks.com , he made an awesome Mario Building Set (http://lumberjocks.com/projects/41525)I really wanted to try it myself, but didn't quite have the right person to make it for. Then at Christmas my son got a Mario game and dove in to a "Mario Phase" It was the perfect opportunity to make this project. I used a 2x4 to cut the base platforms that got painted brown, and the rest was cut from pine 1x4's. I made the tube pieces from a 1 1/2"x2" reducing coupling from my husband?s plumbing stuff, it works really well and the guys can actually fit down the hole. (I am pretending that I meant that to happen, it really was more of an accident/afterthought)
I printed pictures of the different people and characters and used my scroll saw to cut around the outsides. The painting took a really long time, the characters and blocks are all double sided so they can be seen from all sides. Not all of the characters are finished. You can see Boswer is only outlined, and we are missing all of the koopa turtles. those pieces will come a little later.
We have already improved the "thwomps" by drilling a hole through them so they can slide up and down the poles and really thwomp things.
My son has also requested a couple of red, blue and grey platforms for lava, water/ice and the castle levels.
Thanks for looking!

Brag Forum / Weekend Projects
« on: January 01, 2012, 07:53:40 pm »
Last week I spent a bunch of time cleaning out my shop. In the process I un-covered several baskets of un-finished jewelry projects. I decided that the best way to spend the last weekend of the year would be to finish as many of them as I could. I believe the final count was 26 sets of earrings, 54 pendants and 4 pins. The scary/good/bad thing is that I still have things left in the jewelry projects to finish basket. Oh, well, I have to have something to do next year, lol.

Thanks for looking, comments welcome.
