Ask Steve a question. / Hammer door knocker
« on: February 06, 2018, 06:43:23 am »
Hi,

I have been looking for the hammer knocking in the nail door knocker that was featured in your emails.

I have searched the catalogue and have looked through your site but have been unable to find the plans.

Would you be kind enough to post a link to them please.

Regards
Gary

If (and a big if at that) we put our blades in with the teeth facing the rear, would we still need to have the teeth facing down or would they need to face up? If the cutting is on the upstroke when back to front we could use both ends of the blade.

Very bored today by the way.

Got yet another question, so my apologies first.

When your scrollsaw is not in use for any period of time, lets say overnight, do you release the blade tension?

General Scroll Saw Talk / Terminology

Hi folks,

I was hoping if possible, someone could explain to me what is meant when people talk about setting up the saw table with "Zero tolerance" please.  Also should I be doing it?

Many thanks

Well here it finally is,

This is the first thing I have ever made from the scroll saw.

Whilst being far from perfect I am actually rather pleased with me effort.

I actually enjoyed doing this and at the same time learned a huge amount, mainly with the help from these forums.

Let me know what you think.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Grrrrr
« on: November 02, 2017, 11:57:48 am »
Today I have started my first ever real scroll saw project.

I attempted to make the "Nose" glasses holder from from Steve's catalogue, I will post the finished results once sanded, sealed and waxed.

I say attempted because whilst the results are passable they are far from perfect. I used Oak and cut it with an Olson PGT number 9 blade. The problem I had is that when cutting a corner or curve I seem to end up pushing the side of the blade with the wood, which in turn causes me to panic, which causes me to push into the side more or go cutting in totally the wrong direction I should be cutting.

I can only surmise I am feeding the blade wrong and that I should be only pushing from the front. If so where would I push from? Do I need to be applying the pressure in a direct line from the blade or do I need to keep altering the angle whilst doing corners and curves?

I applaud you all as I am sure most of you have forgotten just how difficult this hobby is, once we find things easy and straight forward we take it for granted everybody can do it lol.

Getting a little embarrassing asking so many questions.

What is the coarseness of sandpaper I should have please? it would be for the finishing stages after cutting from a plan I am looking for.

Thank you all again

Ask Steve a question. / problem ( I Think )
« on: October 29, 2017, 03:28:31 pm »
I don't think this is a problem yet but I do believe it could soon become one.

Firstly let me apologize for all of the questions I seem to be asking, your answers have been of great help to me.

I have noticed that when I cut out a shape/hole that the wood only seems to come out of the top. To get it out of the underside of the wood I need to apply a little pressure on it.
What would be causing this?

I have checked my blade ( Still the factory fitted one ) and it seems to be straight, although it is to the left a little and not dead center of the bed, could it be possible that this would be causing the problem?

Thank you

Gary

Is it ok to use veneered wood with scroll saw projects or is the veneer likely to be prone to chipping?

Ask Steve a question. / Tolerances
« on: October 28, 2017, 09:41:45 am »
Hi folks,

I have been playing around cutting some scrap wood trying to cut a straight line.

What are acceptable tolerances?
At first I was cutting over an inch away in some places from the drawn line, I know, but in my defense  I'm new to all of this, I have now cut the last 3 with results that made me unsure as to move on to curves and circles. My Straight lines are straight in places and miss the line by about 1/16 - 1/32 on both sides of the line creating a wave effect. Is this acceptable or should I really be conquering the straight lines fully before moving on?

General Scroll Saw Talk / Angle
« on: October 25, 2017, 01:58:59 pm »
Hi,
Sorry I have another question that may seem daft.
I there any reasons why the scroll saw beds/plate are in a horizontal position, I would of thought if the machine was raised at the back to give a sloping bed it would be a lot easier to follow the patterns. There is probably a glaring obvious answer as to why it is not sloped but for the life of me I can't think what it is.

Well due to problems with my scroll saw I have decided to return it and get a refund, there is definitely something wrong with it.

Although I have only tried it a couple of times I can see the potential and feel I will get a lot of enjoyment out of scroll sawing.

As a result I have just purchased   http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-trade-series-ex-21-scroll-saw-101772  and it will be delivered on Friday.

I just hope I have made the right choice this time  ;D

Does anyone know anything about this make model etc?

General Scroll Saw Talk / Advice needed please
« on: October 25, 2017, 11:15:04 am »
This will sound like a daft question so please be gentle with me.

How do you know when the time is right to change a blade? and is there a general rule as to what blade to use and when?

Ask Steve a question. / Wood
« on: October 22, 2017, 02:42:58 pm »
Hi folks,

I would like a little advice please,

I am due to buy my very first wood Tomorrow and have just realized I don't really have a clue as to what I will need to buy.

My intentions are to make absolutely everything that can be made, but you folks know that enthusiasm is soon replaced with realism.

As someone who is brand new to this hobby wood should I be buying and what sizes? also what amounts?

I know this is very basic, but to me it looks like a massive hobby with so many potential wrong turns,
that I need to at least get the beginning bit correct.

Many thanks
Gary
