General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: using polymer clay
« on: May 17, 2020, 03:51:41 pm »
I've used clay but like tinted epoxy better.  Sealed the insides and then sealed the bottom with tape. Then filled the void with tinted epoxy. Depending on the depth of the tint it can be transparent.  Works well for something to hang in a window.  Make certain the bottom is sealed well or it can be a mess. Don't ask how I know that.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Glue then stain?

Another thought or consideration.  If you stain then use the tightbond transparent glue if you do have squeeze out you will not see the glue joint since you can see right through it

Not a bulb but good replacement for the li8ght. On Amazon they are less than $20 led sewing machine or tool lights. Strong magnet and more than enough light with 20 led's

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Finger Numbness
« on: May 30, 2018, 06:28:52 pm »
the c6 (I think) vertebra being out of place will  do that. Maybe a chiropractor can help.  Bending over and  turning suddenly can cause a slight dislocation   That may bring on numbness.  Stand against a wall with your spine firmly against the wall and raise both arms while concentrating on keeping your back against the wall. When you can raise your arms without any catches or pain you may find the numbness is gone. Not a medical or pseudo practitioner of any kind so take the above for what it is worth

Welcome that is a good saw.  As for wood try the local hobby or craft store. They will have some fairly inexpensive baltic birch plywood in various thicknesses. You will find that wood is somewhat costly.  You can make some neat things with the plywood and gain experience.

Computer questions / Re: BEST PROGRAM TO REPLACE MS WORD (WORD NOT WORKS)

are you certain you do not have wordpad?  Might try looking under accessories.  MS hides stuff that used to be obvious.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Dewalt arm lift
« on: June 21, 2016, 10:54:19 am »
Just a hunch since I had the same problem. I found that one of the nuts holding the motor way back in the back had come loose and was binding on occasion when I tried to lift the arm. Found all the nuts back there needed tightening. Look at the video from Gwennete wood workers on how to disassemble the thing. Takes about 20 minutes and some torque screw removers and some nerve but it is easy in retrospect.

How about coating it with lacquer or shellac before cutting. Or before you take the tape off brush it on the back with thinned white glue or the transparent Titebond.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Quick help with finish on scrollsaw project
« on: December 21, 2015, 08:16:24 am »
Minwax has a pre-finish that soaks into softer grains and takes the uneven color out of pine and other splotchy woods.  That with sanding pre-treating with lacquer or shellac will help.

Have you looked at the 3M wheels. They are up to 1" or maybe 1 1/2" in diameter and fit a 3/32 mandrel. They come in different grits and seem to work well on fret holes as well as general sanding. I got some from Rio Grande and I believe TreelineUSA. On carvings they do not leave scratches. Even though they are small they do last well.   Darryl

Had the same question for Ocooch hardwoods. They can provide it but kind of push you towards 7/8ths since it is more cost effective.

General Scroll Saw Talk / DW 788 rattle
« on: April 27, 2015, 02:57:18 pm »
Started cutting thick item and Dw 788 started to really rattle. Did the bit under the switch but did not see any rubbing. Turned the rod but did not help. With trepidation decided to tear it apart. Used the video from Gwinette Woodturners. Took less time than expected. Found that the plate that holds the eccentric arm has four screws holding it. Two were rattling around loose, the third about half way out. Tightend everything back and it purrs now. Even quieter than when new (about 1 year from ebay if you believe that).
