General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: New Jet Saw Review
« on: November 06, 2016, 10:01:37 am »
One of my main concerns is that im not crazy about the fact that by releasing tension on the upper chuck
it releases the blade . curious if it deforms the blade which makes it unusable ?
This is what ive heard - and have yet been unable to try before i buy -to see if this is a fact .( jet dealer in buffalo wont carry it )
Im a believe that its not a good thing to keep tension on any saw for any period of time when your not running it .

Its a hard thing to find where i live , trying to find the thin stuff is next to impossible -
use to be common to find it in 5 by 5 sheets -- and the stuff i do find is not Baltic at all .

I did try one out. And thought it was great once I got used to it.  what do you think of the speed of cutting compared to the Dewalt?
Im in the same boat -anyone out their who can vouch for the speed -hoping its faster than the excalibur ?
and more durable than the Dewalt. ( thou thats a tough question )

Thou i will add i dont like the idea of the easy clamp on the top - I always take the tension off the top clamp
when its the end of my cutting day -dont believe leaving the tension on anything is ever a good idea.

Hi Steve ,
got a question : Being a full time scroller Im concerned about how fast it cuts - I use to own a Dewalt before I got into using the Eclipse ,
, I even had a 30 inch Canadian made Excalibur for about a year , it was a bit too big for my purposes
and it did not seem to cut as fast as the Dewalt - thou its been a while . the booklet i downloaded from the Jet site mentions its motor speed only goes from 400 to 1550
thou im not sure about its depth of cut -
is this saw a fast cutter or is it basically a Excalibur ?
Made a few calls in my area , but the two places that are Jet dealers dont want one on their floor -told me they can only order it ?
Im a try before i buy person ---
Thanks for your help !

My usual saw is the DeWalt 788.  The Jet would  take a little getting used to. But it sure is a nice saw.

Judy- do you think it cuts as fast as your Dewalt -ive always felt the dewalt cut faster than the excalibur -
thou the jet looks more like the excalibur

I own a couple - a commerial Delta i bought from a Boces auction and a very old Sears and roebuck
I got out of the paper about 35 years ago -the sears is my retirement drill press ( smaller and easy to move )
guess the big stuff gets sold in a few years when we move -I do like the small one -but probably not the best for repeatedly drilling
holes for hours on end like the delta

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Found an older RBI 220 from the 90's
« on: November 02, 2015, 03:57:40 am »
Just a quick correction...De Walts weren't made in the US before moving to Taiwan.  They were made by Sommerville, in Canada, just as the Excaliburs were.  You're right that they are not the same quality as before.

Last week I picked up a Type 1 De Walt that looks brand new, and has has had almost no use.  Paid $200 for it, so I'm a happy camper.  Now maybe I can cut something without all the aggravation of the 2 Excaliburs I own....and wish I didn't.  Life would be good if I could find someone who could fix my two other Type 1 De Walts, 'cause try as I might, I just plain don't like the way the Ex's cut.  I'm falling behind on orders 'cause using them is like cutting in slow motion, and I have to re-position the set screw about every 5 cuts.  This hobby is supposed to be fun!

Sure wish the De Walt service center in Seattle would have done the complete tear-down, inspection, cleaning and parts replacement that they advertise on the website.  I wouldn't have to keep searching for a saw that I love, since I have 3 of them already!

Well, back to work.
Nancy

Thanks -i mention Canada and US -im aware they were made by sommerville in Canada -
Growing up just outside of Buffalo , Ive always considered Canada almost a part of the USA -
before all that Passport stuff prior to 9-11 - We could enter Canada freely without passports ( I miss that ) So i slipped .

Sorry if my post seems negative to Modern Excalibur's and Dewalts - think the older ones are a tad better
guess at my age Im kinda hooked on US made machinery -( Thou im fond of Hegners ) -
Also being a Full time Puzzle guy Im hard on stuff ( basically have worn out saws in the past -seriously )

General Scroll Saw Talk / Found an older RBI 220 from the 90's
« on: October 30, 2015, 12:07:23 pm »
I was at one of our art shows , and a fellow woodworker i know
told me he had an older RBI from the early 1990's that only had about 30 hours
of cut time on it - very reasonably - checked it out and it had very little or no wear on it -
not crazy about the nylon gears on the bottom side -but they looked perfect .
I hot rodded it a bit with a very thin plexiglass top cover ( attached it with clear carpet tape )
Runs nice - i borrowed a 220 from RBI years ago when i was working on one of our books , but returned it
and was considering another as a back up saw -it cuts great -thou a bit more vibration than i like -
Nice to finally add one to my collection !
Been thinking about an excalibur in the near future - but im not a guy who buys made in China stuff -
hoping they come back to Canada -where they belong
( have heard the Newer Dewalts are not as good as the US made ones are ) a friend who has had a few over the past few years
told me to stay away from them- especially if you do alot of cutting like i do --

The RBI is going to be alot of fun -its a nice saw !
