General Scroll Saw Talk / Scroll Saw Magazine
« on: December 19, 2021, 03:23:30 pm »
Has anyone heard of an "Excel" type of index for any scroll saw magazines?
I am not a typist, so it would be a huge task for me to try to make one.
Since I kept almost all of the magazines I bought, it would really be really helpful in searching for a pattern.

Pattern Requests. / Re: Easel

Thanks, I seen that one. I just stayed with the easel pattern I have.
It uses only two pieces of 1/4" wood and almost all is stacked cut.
Thanks again.

Cutting Steve's "Cuddlingcats" and noticed the stand he used.
I have been making a two piece easel stand which is cheap and fast. But, his stand looks real
Nice. Anyone happen to have a copy of that stand?
Thanks

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: MDF
« on: May 19, 2020, 03:41:35 pm »
I found a large "box"  (14x20x36") at the curb. It apparently was a combination of oak and MDF with oak veneer.
It looked good, but, after your replies, I believe I will salvage what oak I can and have a bonfire with the rest.
Thanks for the help.

Gurus,
Can any one advise me in the planning of MDF?
Will it cause the planer blades to dull faster than wood?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

DUH,
I guess it is my dumb thinking.
Never even guessed that the slots were different sizes.
Thanks

Is it my dumbness or has the penny drop pattern have a problem?
What stops the penny from dropping in any of the slots (1-5).

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Has Anyone Made Signs...?
« on: November 10, 2019, 11:20:42 am »
I made a few of these signs using 3/4 solid wood. I found, that if you cover front and back with painters tape and then drill and cut the letters you can spray paint the letters. After removing the tape from front and back, any overspray can be sanded off. It works for me.

General Scroll Saw Talk / O Holy Night
« on: November 10, 2019, 11:07:58 am »
Although I have nowhere near the ability of some, I would like to offer a suggestion for anyone making the "O Holy Night" pattern or any similar type.
Instead of cutting the outside of the pattern first, as Steve suggested, I cut all of the inside work first. Then paint (or not) the backing and and glue it to the pattern.
That way when you cut the outside it, will then be perfectly attached to the front without the worry of it slipping while gluing. If the backing was the same type of wood as the front, the seam is almost invisible.
Hope this helps.

Ask Steve a question. / Indian Portrait
« on: May 20, 2019, 12:36:23 pm »
Steve,
You recently posted a scroll saw project of an Indian Head with feather bonnet. Then a follower of this blog registered a objection and you removed it. Now I would like to give my unrequested opinion on this subject. I am an eighty three year old Pollack, second generation American. Not all that educated, but still thinking. Back in 1890 (or so) an artist by the name of Henry Francois Farny painted many pictures of the American Indian. He has recently become quite in vogue. One of his pictures was of a Indian wearing a headdress bonnet of feathers. I don't know if you used that painting to design your pattern, but, it looks real close. Now ask any young boy what an Indian of the old west would look like and he will inevitably describe the feathered bonnet. Maybe add a horse with no saddle, and a bow and arrow. Factual, maybe, but not derogatory. Think about a Chinese woman wearing a kimono or an Hawaiian wearing a hula skirt or any other stereotype.  If you were making fun of them, I would agree that it is wrong.
All I am saying is that sometimes being politically correct is really dumb, you should not, and can not, make everyone happy.
Pease do not take offense, because none was intended.

Just amazing how smart the people are on this site.
Thank you very, very, much.
If any of you have not tried this font, please do. you will find it is easy to work with. When I get a pattern from Steve, or any other site, I almost always use WordArt to make it mine.
Again Thanks to all.

General Scroll Saw Talk / WordArt

Hi good buddies,

I lost my hard drive and had to reinstall everything. The new windows 10 would not recognize my old CorelDraw so had to spend more
But, enough whining, my problem is that I was using a free font called "WordArt" on almost every project. It is extremely scroll saw friendly and looks good.
However it apparently was not reinstalled and I cannot find it on the net. Help. Can anyone tell me where to find it or help me get a copy.
Thanks for any help

WordArt is a free font and is extremely easy to cut. I do modify the cut on A & R to make it a little stronger but it is not really necessary.

I have a Delta saw and burned the motor out. Replacement motor sells for about $300.00.
For less than that I got a reconditioned saw shipped from Amazon. The reconditioned saw vibrated so bad that I considered it useless.
LIGHT BULB moment!!!  Took the motor from the new saw and placed it in my old one. SMOOTH running and I still have the rest of the saw for other parts.
Kind of an overkill, but, it worked for me.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: delta 40-694
« on: April 25, 2017, 04:46:27 pm »
After a lot of thought (which is very hard for me) I have decided that buying a new saw is not the answer. However on Amazon I was able to purchase a reconditioned Delta 40-694 saw for $270.00 delivered and in only two days. A motor, on line, sells for $300 and no way will I spend over $1000.00 for a saw that may not be in production in a couple of years. I figure that most of the parts from the 40-690 will be useable on the 694 and I like the way the Delta saw works. After hearing how many companies are discontinuing making Scroll Saws I am wondering if we are a dying breed. Although I have not made enough money to maintain my current rate of poverty, Enough has been saved to pay for the saw. And the hours of enjoyment are priceless. About 90% of what I make is either donated to people or military recreational facilities. My house is still overloaded with stuff made in my shop. So, as long as possible, with Steve's help, I will continue to saw.
